Deferred Now What?

12% deferred accepted RD last year. Thats lower than regular RD acceptance rate! is that because the ED pool is just weaker or that when you’re deferred, its simply a nicer way of being rejected? >_< what can we do to get in after deferral?

It's because if you're deferred, it's not likely that too much will change by the time you get reviewed for RD. If they deferred you, they want you to improve something, and it's some area you'll be able to improve (not GPA or anything like that)

So ask yourself what the weakest part of your application was, and improve it!

If it was ECs, go out and do something important! Start a club, become a leader, gain significant contributions for a charity etc.

If it was your SATs, do everything you can to get those higher

if you added those deferred who got into regular and those accepted through early...it's a 32% acceptance rate for ED pool...pretty high! just need to beat two other ppl

hmm...are deferred people even in the same pile as RD people for adcoms? or are they totally separated?

i have been waiting for this thread! thak god its here

i need to raise my act it was only 28 everything else was impeccable

same pile i believe. for me, being deferred gives me confidence. it means that they looked at your application, and they thought: "ok, this kid could definately fit our class, but we want to see what he can really do, and how much interest he really shows in our school."

i know i definately looked like a wierd applicant because all of a sudden after the end of sophomore year, i went from a straight B kid, to a straight A kid that is considered one of the smartest of my class. i also found a passion for saxophone and bioengineering. the fact that i did all this so quickly probably looked a little artificial to penn. i know that i need to show them that im not just doing this for college sake, but for myself.

you need to analyze what made penn question your application. you got deferred man, give yourself a pat on the back for getting this far. think of it as "you are halfway in". now you just gotta walk a few extra steps to show penn that they were right in thinking that you could fit their class.

always be positive :) i guarentee you the 12% of deferred that get in are those that think positive and realize what i just stated.

aww. yea i guess we all just have to be positive about it.

ok so let's see...what do we need to do to get ourselves in penn in april?

1) call admissions office asap and tell them you're interested. ask if there's anything you can do..
2) send in...updated test scores, midyear report
3) hopefully get an interview if you never got one. do they give interviews to defer people?
4) write a letter with all your recent accomplishments and to clean up things that might have been ambiguous in your app.

anything else? i heard negative things about writing another essay and sending in too much useless stuff.

btw, pennhunter, are you the one that applied to nursing&wharton joint program?

i applied to the nursing and wharton program

thats pretty cool. i heard it was alot more likely for joint program kids to be deferred just b/c its so competitive. is wharton your second choice?

I applied to Huntsman... and signed the ED binding agreement that if I get rejected from Huntsman I will still be considered for Wharton under ED. Hunstman site says that most ED applicants are deferred. I am deferred, sois there any chance that they missed that I signed that agreement and I never was considered for wharton alone?

If I indeed was considered for wharton and now im deferred... what will happen next? Will I go again to the Huntsman pool or will I stay in the Wharton one?

Ah hehe I know Im thinking too much into it but I REALLY REALLY want to get in... called today and it wsa closed... ill call on monday to talk with my regional director...!!!

That letter of deferral I received that in April I might either be denied or accepted... and wait-list? Is it possible to be on the wait-list?

hey bern. same thing here for my program. when i called friday the sec. told me i was deferred form the dual program so there for we have a shot. for you to get in on the early dual waiver thingy you would have to be denied form the dual prgram first. ( your in the running) and we are in the same situation.

gud luk to both of u

hey i'm a bit new at this whole cc thing. but yeah...
i got deferred too from UPenn.
but honestly, i was terrified of getting rejected cause my SATs are in my opinion pretty subpar for any ivy league school.
So I guess, i'm just confused like every deferree, what to do now besides send in mid year reports? cause i'm done with collegeboard, those evil people.
yeah, so what to think and do.. xT

i read something on another thread about customized deferral letters...although thats not every likely....do you think we all got different ones tailored to our problems? mine basically said to send in the mid-year report and additional SAT scores. anyone else?

nvm that was wishful thinking. buuut...do you guys think they'll tell us what we need to improve on specifically if we call them? i guess i'll find out monday when i call :)

how bad will 3 Bs look on the mid year report? to wharton and colleges in general? i applied to the jerome fisher and was deferred. so does that mean, like pennhunter, i was event considered for wharton alone?

im was a 4.0 student til this semester. im writing explanations for the grade drop - work, football, apps. do u guys think that will help at all?

nvm mine said that too, i guess its not customized unless we both have the same issue. ah doing more apps is such a killjoy for the holiday season & this whole situation is making me unconfortable, midyear reports are going to kill mee :[. senior year courses are actually pretty hard :[
