I’m not going to say I’m happy with my deferral, but I know we should feel lucky that we’re considered competitive at a school like Princeton!

I agree that it’s pretty terrible of them to keep so many of us guessing for another 3 months, especially because most of obviously don’t know how to react to getting deferred… I keep changing my mind as to whether it’s a good thing or not.
I second the idea that we come up with a list of DO’s and DON’T’s for being deferred because while I want to show that I’m still willing to fight for my spot, I don’t want to annoy the adcom with a bunch of reports.

Also I’ve heard a rumor about there being different versions of deferral letters… Any truth to that??

Hey guys,
I got deferred too… oh well, fingers crossed for good news in the spring. @aneely7 this is what mine said:

Anyways, been keeping my mind off of the decision by making a tumblr with my friend. We’ve found the whole process to be pretty frustrating and contrived so we’re just venting lol. Not spamming, but check us out. I think we’re pretty funny! collegerage(.)tumblr(.)com

@azahra (post 8): contacting your interviewer would put him/her in an awkward position.

1) they have no idea of why you were deferred
2) they likely have no constructive advice for you
3) if they are like my alma mater (another Ivy), they have been told not to contact deferred students unless ultimately admitted in April

What do you guys think about sending in additional essays? I’ve realized that they were probably one of the weakest parts of my application… Would that just be weird or do you think they would actually read/consider them???

It makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. I’m just trying to find a balance between showing that I’m still interested and wanting to fight for a spot but not annoy the adcom. I’m already taking SATs again to boost my superscore, and if I also submit my Mid-Year report and another rec letter would that be a good amount??

I totally understand the drive to “do something more” Beyond what’s been discussed here already, I think you all need to accept the fact that your “best foot forward” was already submitted and not try to invest inordinate time/energy into creating the supposed extra boost to your deferred app.

At the end of the day, the fact that you’re even a deferee from friggen Princeton tells me you’re excellent students with a 99.9% likely successful college career ahead of you! Princeton’s loss!

Best of luck to you all on your other apps and during this waiting period until April!

I’m retaking the SATs in January and I was wondering how I notify Princeton. I’m already having the scores sent when they’re available, but do I need to send a letter or something stating my new scores/superscore (hopefully!) when I have them??

also deferred. my guidance counselor seems really excited about me calling from his office and re-affirming interest. I’m not so sure that’s a good idea.

@alexa221 your tumblr is amazing. I keep checking up on it cus you update so often (great excuse for procrastinating!) if the admissions officers have any sense of humor, that would be so perfect to send them a link as recent accomplishments!

It is my understanding that students are deferred not simply so Princeton can string them along for several more months but so that (a) a student can prove a continued upward trend in grades, extracurricular accomplishment, or another aspect of the application; or (b) Princeton can round out their class with the appropriate numbers of engineers, actors, etc., much like a waitlist. That explains why they defer so many: they want to keep their options open.

In other words, a deferral strikes me as a “rejection unless ____.”

Could any of you offer advice on these points of sending an update email:
Is this sort of a one time shot, and only in January?
Should you send one even without anything important to say, just so that you still look interested?

I feel like I could send a fluff one today or I could wait a bit til I have more interesting stuff to say and send a better one, not sure which is more advisable.

I am a Pton’16 Intl who was deferred and got in RD last year. First of all, words fail to express my gratitude to and love of Princeton-I feel that it is a place that is so conducive and give you unimaginable help in every way so that everyone can develop into the person they are meant to be deep down. There is the fabulous McGraw tutoring for all first-year courses so if you are stuck on a particular subject but would like to do more of it (like for me I want to do more science but did horribly in physics in high school) you are not doomed early. I find that my mental speed, knowledge retention have increased about 3-5 times literally, and have found interest in 5 new fields. Princeton takes great care of its students in every possible way, with academics, personal/social support, research opportunities, extracurricular passions, hobbies, and career services-it is no coincidence that we have the highest-earning alums or the most donating/loyal alums. I love this place with all my heart and soul and want to play its Alma mater “Old Nassau” at my wedding. seriously.

(I’m not a ■■■■■-if you look at my posts you may see that I asked some questions about flunking IB this summer-I had serious personal troubles that made me unable to focus at all. Luckily I passed with an above average score and had been able to take all the classes I wanted to take.) note: most of the prereqs are not strictly enforced.

Now onto deferred advice: I feel for you guys, I really, really, really do. I was heartbroken last year this time too. My guidance counselor called admissions to advocate for me but I’m not sure if this helped. Other than that I didn’t send in any update (my gc suggested writing a letter of interest and I finished writing it but decided against sending it in last minute-just didn’t feel right). I would suggest a letter of interest only if you feel your essays are horrible or are too incompatible with Princeton’s vibe.

Just have faith, and work hard. In the end Princeton is the only HYPSM school that accepted me and it turned out for the best. I couldn’t be happier or more at home anywhere else as I discovered the greatness of Princeton these last 4 months. If Princeton is really the place for you, you really need it, and you’ve shown it in your app, they’ll eventually take you :)

oh and by the way, I seem to have contributed to the notion that there are many versions of the deferral letter by my posts in last year’s SCEA forum. There is not. I was so shocked and “omg what the heck what am I gonna do” after reading the first paragraph that I didn’t remember what it looked like or how long it was afterwards. I only remembered 2 very short paragraphs saying that I’m deferred and they’d like to see my academics in the spring. My mom printed it out for me and it was the standard one, same for this year’s save for year number.

So guys, silly question here; do we just mail the additional letters of recommendation right to the admissions office, or do we include an explanation of anything else we’ve done with it?

Thanks for your post Maybirthday (my birthday’s in May too)! Cheered me up ^and to Beo you mail additional letters of recommendation, you don’t have to include an explanation of anything else you done but can if u want
