Hey everyone, I was deferred EA at Boston College yesterday and honestly, am pretty clueless why. I’m pretty dumbfounded as to why I was deferred…I seriously thought I was a great match. Someone please give me some imput on maybe WHY and now what should i do? :/

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments:

Wow, I really have no idea why they didn’t accept you  it sucks, really, because it could be all demographics and other weird stupid stuffs. like, maybe they filled their quota of kids from NY, or of white females, or of athletes. I honestly have no idea why. But you’ll get in somewhere else just as good, there’s no way you wont!

While I’m not saying this is definitely the reason you were deferred, keep in mind that in terms of numbers, there is a majority of BC students that are both white and female. BC is now 53% women (47% men) according to the most recent facts which is an increase in women compared to a year or two ago. In fact, BC has so many girls that they had to convert a freshman dorm that typically was co-ed to all-girls. The point is, their intention is to bring this ratio back around 50:50 for a number of reasons, one reason naturally being to maintain diversity. Therefore, there is more competition not only for girls, but Caucasian girls. So, while I’d definitely say you are a match academically and such, you need to remember that it’s more difficult for someone like you with those stats to get accepted than it is for someone else, if you get what I’m saying. That’s simply the name of the game, and nothing you came blame yourself for. HOWEVER, like I said, I don’t know why you may have been deferred, and this might not be the reason at all.

thanks guys. it was pretty disheartening to find this out because after working so hard to be a match for BC, a school I really want to go to, and seeing who else got in over me, its just a little upsetting to be deferred at this point. Hopefully I’ll be competitive in the Regular pool!

This is the first time in your academic career that you are going to go from the small Catholic Girls HS (small pond) setting to a must broader base of competition (big pond). Notre Dame will be as competitive or moreso than Boston College, so you are going to need to start evaluating your second tier options to provide some level of safety/security for this upcoming August/September.

Early action is about a college trying to lock up top students and form a foundation for the incoming class if at all possible. Let me be “tough” and show you a very editted version of your profile :

ACT Math : 28
ACT Science : 27
SAT Math I : 660
SAT World History : 650
Essay : Strength

Those test scores are not EA material. While you might pout that others might have gained acceptance over you in the EA round, there is nothing about those numbers that scream that an egregious error has been made. Comparisons do not help your case at this point since your application must stand on its own.

Next, most every chance-me poster states that their essay is excellent. Clearly, this cannot be the case. As you did not share the content, it is hard to assess your approach, but take some time to review the other deferrals where we have commented about essay content. Are you qualified to attend a school like Boston College (or Notre Dame)? Certainly. Is your application demonstrating that ability? We are not so sure.

Boston College is very selective. You are learning the hard way what really happens with Top 30 schools in the nation. Hopefully, your material will better resonate with Notre Dame as well as the Boston College RD round readers. You should spend some time now thinking about how you will follow-up with Boston College and reestablish your interest in the school - despite your posting of May 23rd.

thanks for your imput…not going to lie but it is kind of weird how you went back and looked at my previous post about notre dame. truth is, notre dame and BC are my top schools, and now being deferred at BC really hurts. obviously, math and science, as well as the ACT as a whole, are not my strong suits. hence why I am more optimistic about my 2120 SAT. as you can see, english and writing ARE my strong suits (750 writing on sat, 11 essay, 35 eng on ACT) and i will tell you, my common app essay (the only one BC required) was about being a red head, was humorous, and everyone who read it thought it was original, creative and funny. this leads me to think my essay was probably one of the STRONGEST parts of my application.
