I did ED for Brown and was surprisingly deferred instead of rejected. I was thinking of enclosing a letter stating that the school is still my first choice, and perhaps a letter of recommendation from a current teacher in the envelope with my mid year grade report. Does this seem wise, or do I appear like I’m hounding the school with too much information? I sent in three letters of recommendation with my ED application.

hi there...im in the same boat. in fact i was considering mailing my interviewer about what he suggests i should do to show more interest in Brown (now is that a good idea?). the extra teacher recommendation might work if he/she mentions specifically why you're a perfect fit for brown. hmm...lemme kno wat else ur sending because extra stuff won't appear like you're hounding the skl. which dept hav you applied for?

I wanted to do psych. It's so frusterating because my guidance department has no idea what to do with being deferred. I'm so afraid of seeming either too pestering, or too unconcerned. I was thinking of having a current teacher send something in, but then I worry.
I emailed the girl I interviewed with, and she said to call and ask admissions what they accept. I have to admit that scares me too.
Blah. I think I might just go for it.

Kisstherain: I recommend you read this article. thoroughly. The applicant in that article called the admissions committee of her particular college (it wasn't Brown) and they definitely recommended that you should send a letter. I also saw a post somewhere on CC (can't find it at the moment) made by a girl who was deferred from Brown, and she also called the admissions committee who said she should definitely write a letter and/or send additional scores, credentials, accomplishments. The thought of actually calling the admissions committee scares me too, so I'm just going to write and send a really heartfelt (but not desperate-sounding) letter.

I was deferred from Brown and PLME, and I'm hoping that this letter will let the admissions committee know that if I were honored with an acceptance, I would definitely attend.

Good luck!

Thanks so much!
Were your guidance counselors willing to call and find things out for you?

I actually didn't ask my guidance counselors to call for me. I'm sure they would be willing to, but if anyone was to call I would rather have it be me.

Out of all the steps taken by the student in that article, I'll send any additional scores, accomplishments, etc. in the coming weeks and write an "appeal" letter to the admissions committee.

That makes me feel better; that's what I was planning on doing too. Don't you feel frustrated when you hear about everyone who got in to their dream school?

Well, when I find out that my friends got into their dream schools, it makes me really happy :)

Even though I was deferred, I'm staying hopeful. At least we we weren't denied outright! Brown's interested at the very least, and even that's an accomplishment.

Good luck!

I just realized that i didn't send in the "first quarter grades" to brown during the ED round! did everyone else send the stuff? ohhhh kisstherain n lotus blossom, hope we all end up at brown together!!! God, collegeapps r a pain.

I went to the College Center at my school and sent my first quarter grades, but I definitely sent them after Nov. 1. I thought I read somewhere on the Brown website (I can't find it at the moment) that they had to receive first quarter grades by November 15, and I'm pretty sure I sent mine after that date too. My application wasn't considered incomplete, so I guess it worked out.

Ah well, I would just make sure your mid-year grades are in as soon as possible. And aww, I hope we all end up at Brown together too, kisstherain and aranya! :) fingers crossed

Mine were set after that too, cause my school didn't end the marking period till later. I'm crossing my fingers, and my toes for us. I <333 college stress. :)

I did Summer@Brown, went to information session in our area, and had a great interview. I have a good ACT score of 33 but a lower SAT (2100) so I only sent ACT. I have great extra-curricular’s , and a 4.0 in 12 hours of college German (my school did not include this in my grade average) however, my grades have been falling my senior year, with all AP classes…down to a 3.6. Will this definitely hurt my chances? Should I explain that my grades went down i.e. knee surgery and long physical therapy, cousin’s sudden death, mother lost job… they aren’t great reasons for falling grades. Bottom line: I’m going to send a letter saying Brown is still my first choice, should I defend my first semester grades? Thanks. This is the first time I’ve posted, so I’m not sure how this works.

…then it’s most likely too late to try to change an admission officer’s initial read of your application. You can send in extra reccs and more info…maybe a sample of the “profound” poetry you wrote after your boyfriend/girlfriend suggested that you just be friends…but very little that you send in at this point is going to change someone’s impression of your academic strength or your intriguing-ness as an applicant. (Qualifier: if you’ve been named finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search or attained some other national recognition then what I’ve just said doesn’t apply - there are always exceptions.)

The good thing about being deferred is that you have a chance to keep showing how much you love the institution that has deferred you. The other sort-of good thing about being deferred is that you were deferred for a reason - and it’s usually because the admission officer wants more context before making a final call. For instance: what are the other applicants from your school or region like?

My best advice is to write a letter that restates your undying affection for the school, maybe update the Admission Office on a few new achievements or activities…and then sit on your hands till April.

If you wind up on the wait list (which can seem like cruel and unusual punishment if you were already deferred) then the rules change and suddenly sending lots of extra stuff isn’t always a bad idea…But we’re not there yet. It’s only February.

bigelow…welcome to CC. Sorry about your terrible fall/winter. I don’t think you should point out anything negative, it won’t go over well. No one wants to see “excuses”. Just mention the new accomplishments, don’t reiterate what’s already on your application.

what’s the difference b/w being deferred and being on the wait list?

being deferred means you’re reconsidered for regular decision. from there, you can then be put on the waitlist, which is a list of students that may or may not be admitted later depending on how many of the admitted students decide to go to Brown.

as a person pretty familiar with the app process, i would always suggest the student, not the counselor do the calling, but i would also always suggest a deferred student send an additional teacher rec and an additional letter with the myr

hinderpanda: After you are deferred, you will be asked if you want to be placed on a wait list for a possible chance of still being accepted. you can decline this offer if you want.
