Deferred question

So somebody told me (don't really remember who...) that deferred students aren't really compared to the regular decision applicants. They are just taken as a select group, compared to other deferred students, and about 10% of those get accepted.

This all seems kinda stupid to me, since if that was the case there'd be no reason to defer. Anybody know what really happens?

P.S. Yes, I got deferred.

I'm not entirely sure how the admissions process works, but I think it would be more reasonable if deferred students are simply compared to the rest of the RD applicants. Good luck!

aoh youa re right , it would not be logical to just compare amo0ngst the deffered as they could have admitted them in the first place....it would
seem that to make sense the process would be like Mondo said...

Maybe they have an additional round to pull the deffered-now-accepted
rate down to 10%?

...just speculating

:)

Well, from what I gather/remember from talking to my GC/admissions counselor when I was deferred...

You are considered in the more general pool of regular decision applicants, and your application is reevaluated as if you were applying fresh and new. BUT they do know you were deferred, so they know you originally applied ED. This indicates to them that Duke is your first choice school, and you have a strong interest in attending. Of course, depending on the strength of the pool of applicants, this may work out very much in your favor.

K thnx for the info/advice. very helpful
