deferred: question

i got deferred, and in the letter it said that over 1550 people applied for early decision and one third got in, one third got deferred, and one third got rejected, and that they would be able to admit only 10% of those who got deferred.

i'm a little confused; arent all of those who got deferred supposed to be compared to RD applicants? then how do they only pick 10% of them? i mean, lets say if all deferred applicants are better than RD applicants then wouldnt they have to admit all(100%) of them?

and if they're really admitting 10% of deferred applicants, then basically i have no chance of getting in cause thats less than 100 students out of a little over 500...

You can still get in. That's why Duke didn't reject you.
You just need to convince Duke you are really interested in going.
Make sure to get really good grades, if that was the problem.
If the problem was test scores, I don't know if you can still retake the SAT/ACT at this point.. but if you can, do it.
I have a good friend here who got into Duke after being deferred ED. It's definitely possible.

They're saying that if past years are any indication (and they are), that about 10% of deferred early applicants get in during RD. In theory your scenario is possible, but not realistic.

Don't give up as in my S class there were a few who got in of the dererred list...the thiung is if you are close they need to see why your a good fit and want to attend. Easier since you applied ED.

I got in after being deferred and know a few people who did. A lot of people see it basically, like you said, as a rejection, but many others send in additional information, etc etc. I'm a strong believer that those are the ones who have a very strong chance at acceptance. So yes, it definitely happens and you do have a shot!
