Deferred=rejection?

I’ve been reading up on Brown’s deferral rates and it seems like getting deferred is like a double slap to the face. You want to have hope when really they just reject you later. Is that true? Here are my stats for reference:

THE NUMBERS
SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (800 reading, 780 math, 720 writing)
SAT II: 800 math 2, 700 chem
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.93
Rank: top 5%
AP (score in parenthesis): calc ab(5), eng lang(5), eng lit(5), chinese(5), world history(5), bio(4), environmental sci(4), US history(4)
IB (score in parenthesis): all you need to know is that i got my diploma a year early
Senior Year Course Load: Four college courses from local college professors, IB Further math, AP Chem, and pe

THE OTHER STUFF
Extracurriculars (leadership in parenthesis): Figure skater(National-level Champion, USFSA Double Gold Medalist, now a coach), Piano(RCM Level 8, Advanced Rudiments, been to a few local festivals and done well), National Organization for Women(founder and president), Robotics(Media Officer), FPS(member, 3rd at State), Honor Society(member), Green Team(Media Officer), Literary Warriors(founder and Media Officer)
Job/Work Experience: Figure Skating Assistant Coach, Intern at local medical center, Intern at UW Dept. of Microbiology
Volunteer/Community service: NOW fundraising/volunteering at local women’s shelter, coaching, volunteering at the medical center
Summer Activities: NYLF on Medicine, Summer Stretch at UW
Essays: had adequate essays, its too bad my common app essay is a lot better now
Teacher Recommendation: Math teacher, Bio teacher(even though they are both science, they know me best
Counselor Rec: i have no idea probably just average
Additional Rec: none…did they allow additional recs?
Interview: above average, we went overtime, and he seemed pretty interested but not ecstatic

PERSONAL STATS
State: WA
School Type: public, mid size
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): absolutely, utterly none
Reflection
Strengths: Figure skating, two internships (one in the field, and one in research)
Weaknesses: asian, also i guess Brown doesn’t pay much attention to figure skaters
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: low Chem SAT subject, and just not enough leadership positions so I don’t stand out enough

I think you fare as a pretty strong candidate!

If you were going to be rejected, Brown would have just rejected you outright when ED decisions came out rather than deferring you. A deferral just means they want to see your application again within the larger context of the rest of the applicants.
A deferral definitely means you have a chance, though! Don’t give up hope!

Wow, that is one solid resume. Surprising.

Frankly, does Deferred=rejection? For most people YES.

But so does this: applied = rejection.

You’ll end up at a great school. Perhaps Brown, perhaps not. You’ll have great offers come the end of March. Good luck.

T2^ said applied= rejection. Funny but true.

OP, I agree with T2 you should end up at a great school come end of March!! Good luck!

Deferred doesn’t mean rejection. Definitely not. I was deferred and now I am a student at Brown. I recommend sending a letter to your regional representative emphasizing your continued interest in Brown and any new activities or awards of yours. If you need help with this letter, feel free to PM me.

if deferred meant rejection, they would have REJECTED you. logic skills? :Post

(and i mean that in the most supportive way possible, of course. In other words, you still have a very viable chance. You WEREN’T rejected. Many are!)

Those who were deferred: What does you application status page look like now? Does it say “View Decision” and then tell you to check back later?

my friend who is dux of our class got in ED with a 1900 SAT
