My incoming freshman daughter found out at 5:30 today that her roommate is deferring. She moves in tomorrow at 2 PM into the Honors dorm. Res Life is closed now. Anyone out there have any advice on what we should do now? This is our first child going to college so this is all new to us. TIA!

Even after school starts, there is still some swapping around of rooms and such. I’d say being in the honors dorms gives her a higher chance of having someone want to take the now empty bed (since it’s nicer than the regular dorms). Even if she is the only person in the room for a while, you shouldn’t be charged extra for them room because it’s not her/your fault that the other bed is empty.

If you need more in depth information, I’d recommend asking on the Living at UMass Facebook page. They are usually pretty good at replying to questions on there, sometimes even after their office hours. For some reason I cannot link you to the page, but if you just search Living at UMass Amherst on Facebook you should be able to find it.

There are more honors program students than can fit in the CHC complex. I am sure she will get a roommate.
