deferred SCEA, chances?

SAT: 2330 (CR-800, Math-780, W-750, 9 on essay)
SAT II: US HIstory-780, Literature-760, Spanish with listening-770
ACT:35
GPA: weighted-4.4 unweighted- I don't really know, but my grades are mostly a's and a+'s with a few a-'s sprinkled in and one B+ first marking period in AP Physics

Extracurriculars/summer activities: Marching Band(drum major), Model UN(head delegate, won outstanding delegate at last year's Cornell MUN conference), Debate(several speaking and one team award), Mock Trial(attorney, co-president), Jazz ensemble, stage crew, varsity fencing, Boy Scouts(assistant senior patrol leader, Eagle Scout), national honor society-tutoring freshman physics as a volunteer, Johns Hopkins center for talented youth, volunteered for a summer at UN headquarters, ummmm yeah i think that's it

Essays: abysmal, or so I thought. They were very rushed and not exactly the best writing i have ever done. One was about being drum major and reflecting on how old teh seniors seemed when I was a freshman and how young the freshman now seem to me, then I went on to talk about how I never thought I would get to this point, and how the band developed over the course of the year, yada yada. For the common app i did "a person who has had a significant influence on you" and wrote about my great aunt who was really energetic and generous and loved to travel until she died at age 85 and how I want to be like her (terrible, I know)

teacher recs: i don't know i haven't seen them, but I think they're pretty good. I know at least one of them is probably really good. one is from my sophomore english teacher, who is also my mock trial adviser, the other is from my eleventh grade spanish teacher

Awards: National merit semi-finalist, Bloustein Scholar (it's an NJ thing), high honor roll

hmmm what else.... oh right, classes

APs: US history-5 Macroeconomics-5

I'm taking AP European History, AP Physics, AP Calculus AB, AP SPanish, and AP Englsih this year. The rest of my classes are pretty much all honors, except for like gym and band and stuff like that.
downtothewire is online now

oh, and as a secondary question, does anybody have any suggestions as to where to go from here in terms of contacting admissions officers/sending in additional materials?

dttw: any replies you'll get are only slightly-informed guesses. The fact that you're a deferred EA applicant say's that you're viable and will be reconsidered (much better than reject). Really no one here has a working crystal ball. Sorry but I don't have words of comfort to you beyond congrats on your achievements to date. You should already be rightly proud. Best of luck to you

its really freaky but i have like your exact same stats, same scores, same extracurriculars, same GPA

i think yale is hard for anyone just because so few people are actually getting in on academic merit

but i think you definitely have a chance at yale, it's just not something we can really guess on because you're definitely qualified, its just luck

you should just apply to A LOT of places (that's what i'm doing) and you're going to get in somewhere

ha let's not talk about it, i'm working on application number 13 of 18 right now...

You may already know this/have heard this, but I am convinced that your poor essays did you in. I think that essays are an UNBELIEVABLY IMPORTANT factor in terms of differentiating similar candidates in the college applications process, and if there's any way for you to correct that deficiency, then you need to.

I really don't know if sending in additional essays or anything is at all appropriate at this point, but maybe someone better informed than I would know.

that's exactly what I think, and i'm trying to find out right now if i can send in new ones...

I sent in a new supplement essay (which I know is WAY BETTER), and my admissions officer was chill with it, so you could try that...

i asked my admissions officer and he didn't want anyone to send in additional essays. they simply don't have time. i was deferred SCEA too

To the OP - I don't know why you said that your essay about looking at the future from the present as a freshman and looking at the past from present as a senior is a bad essay idea. If it was not written well that is a different matter altogether but the story is not bad at all. Anyways, you have a stellar record - bravo.

oh i also forgot to mention that i'm multiracial - half hispanic, half white.

WishyWashy is correct... the admissions are looking for people who are unique and will bring a diversity to the college community... especially like Yale... for example, someone had your exact same stats and extracurriculars... that is a a bad sign... you have to really show the admissions who you are through a strong, well developed essay on a unique topic (something you even admit to messing up on)... based on the fact that over 2000 early action candidates were deferred and many others will be applying RD (Ylae only has about 1300 undergrads at each level)... your chances are unfortunately small (but they are there).
