Deferred SCEA: What can we do to make be better?

I realize the title is messed up... I was going to say, "make our applications better" but got sidetracked.

Yep, I got deferred as well. They emphasized the "small number of applicants to get deferred" part, but from looking through the forum, that seems to be untrue.

To be honest, Stanford isn't my top choice. However, this does give me an ego boost, especially as an international student seeking financial aid, that lets me know that I"m not totally useless haha.

So how do you guys think we could improve our chances for applications in general in the Regular Decisions round?

Maybe we're all just on the better end of the spectrum.

From what I've heard, last year about 10% of the EA applicants got deferred, while 16% got accepted and 74% got rejected. I can't imagine that it would be THAT much different this year.

...I for one would love to get in regular. I guess I'll just try to bring up my grades...we'll see.

Is there a difference between chances of deferees compared to chances of an RD applicant?

All I know is that in the recent past about 10% of deferrees get in Regular Decision...but you probably know that too, it's in the deferral letter.

Does anyone else know?

So it's the same? So basically, deferees can look at it way: you haven't applied to Stanford yet; the past three months have been a dream. You just submitted your application. Wait for results in April. Hah!

Yeah, here come the 18 other applications I need to get done. :P

I am excited about my deferral. I feel as though I have been given a new chance.
It was probably grades and SATIIs not being in. Now, just have to finish the semester strong and show that first half of senior year is great.

My friend and I are so happy about deferrel. She called me telling me she got deferred too and we got so excited and stuff. like "CONGRATULATIONS OMG"

haha I am going to go try win a Nobel prize, maybe that will help.

Wait, so are chances for the deferred lower than that of RD applicants?! That would be totally unfair!

^^^ I believe so.

I may be wrong, (please correct me if I am), but I think that it's sort of like, they look at the numbers (both of applicants and money-wise) after evaluating the RD applicant pool and then say, okay, do we need people who can pay and/or do we have extra space to consider some more from the deference pool, etc.

My e-mail said the chances for deferral-->acceptance ~10%, so that's a LLLITTLE bit higher than RD applicants, but...meh I guess that's actually pretty much the same.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

LOL. Yeah, go and do that guys. But yeah, before today, I thought deferrals were "meh." But now I'm sighing of relief for you guys who got deferred. You scraped by for a 2nd chance.

Good luck to you all. Hopefully we'll all pull through the RD round

Okay, so deferees get a second chance in the RD round. The thing is, how can we gain an advantage over the RDers, because we know that we're not "good enough" to get accepted out right?

Any suggestions?

Find a way to tell them you're stats have improved. If you don't have any new test scores to send, make sure your grades stay high so your GPA might improve, and maybe tell them about new activities you've been doing in your senior year. Again, I might be mistaken, but I believe that Stanford accepts an optional, update-us-on-your-life-for-the-last-6-months form.

Yeah they do.

I don't think I can improve my GPA, but I guess I can say more about activities. However, they only wanted to see 7 things on the Common App in terms of extracurriculars. So should I put in an updated resume?

did the deferral letter actually say, Congratulations?

no it did not.

Personally, I have it going good for me with the update webpage.

I am still really into my activities, found very great new opportunities, found new interests, and will get straight A's this semester with 6 AP's and a sport.

Do yall think I was deferred because my GPA went from a 3.25 Sophmore year to a 4.0 Junior year? In the e-mail it said something about first semester grades, I'm in 5 APs this year and will get As in all of them except English. Think I stand a chance in RD?

Low Income African American
2280(800m,740CR and W)
800 math 2 and physics
750 USH

Other Stuff:
Astrophysics research last summer
Lots of Computer Science ECs
President of CS club etc.
Should I update them and tell them I made Silver Division of USACO?

WHAT???? You were deferred? How is that possible? You have every single hook that I do and blow my stats out of the water. This cant be true.
