I was deferred for EA, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to write a letter to the admissions department explaining that Georgetown would be my first choice if I got in? I was also thinking of updating them with any awards/accomplishments that I've had over my senior year.

Let me know if this would be helpful and also if you have any tips for the letter.
Are there any other actions a deferred applicant should take?

It’s definitely a good idea to let admissions know that you’re still very much interested in Georgetown and would be thrilled to go. Plus, adding new awards or activities can never hurt.
I’m in the same position as you and something else I did and you can do if you have the opportunity is ask your guidance counselor to call your regional admissions rep to not only reiterate your interest (you’ll get a nice note on your file saying he/she called on your behalf), but also to maybe find out a reason why you weren’t accepted EA. This can be especially helpful info if there are no glaring red flags on your app or you were confused why you didn’t get in the first time. They may be able to point to an iffy area they weren’t sure about, and perhaps then you could supplement your app with new stuff to hopefully fill in the gaps.
Good luck!

Just check on Georgetown’s policy on further communication. Stanford, for example, does NOT want any communication from anyone along the way (and only the information they asked for)–even if in the end you are NOT accepted.
