(Deferred Student) Additional Letter of Rec?

I was deferred during SCEA. If one of my teachers or internship supervisors wanted to send in a recommendation letter, would it still have to be postmarked by January 1st as for all other RD applicants, or is there not as hard of a deadline? Thanks for the help!

My son, who applied RD, had an additional recommendation letter sent to Harvard after January 1st. His guidance counselor said this was fine. My son was accepted to Harvard.

Thanks!! Would this include an additional letter from a teacher, complete with teacher evaluation? Is that okay after the deadline (of course, the other 2 evaluations have been in for months).

Before Harvard went back to having early admissions, my daughter applied to Yale SCEA and was deferred. She then had a teacher write her a 3rd letter of recommendation – without the teacher evaluation form – which was sent to Yale in mid-January after the RD deadline. My daughter was ultimately rejected from Yale in the RD round and is currently a senior at her back-up school (Harvard).

My point in bringing all this up: unlike lacgrad’s son, not everyone who is deferred and gets a teacher to write a third letter of recommendation is admitted to the college of their dreams. So, don’t hang your hopes on that 3rd LOR!

Just a clarification, my son applied RD. The letter was from his the supervisor of his 2 time summer internship. When the supervisor (Harvard alum & former school superintendent) found out about my son’s Harvard application, he contacted my son’s Harvard interviewer and asked to send a recommendation. The supervisor knew my son extremely well and wrote a letter which addressed totally different aspects of my son’s experiences than his teachers. It was not the traditional “teacher evaluation form.” The important point is an additional letter needs to say something new. Also, as gibby said, an additional recommendation does not mean acceptance. Furthermore, while my son was accepted to Harvard, he chose to attend a small Liberal Arts College which he liked better during accepted students days. He remains very happy with his choice. Sometimes the best match school is not what you originally expect!

^^ Pearls of wisdom!

I completely understand that a third LOR guarantees nothing; also, I have applied to other schools RD of course, but it would definitely be nice to have as many choices as possible, and I want to do as much as is in my power to have Harvard as one of those options.

This particular teacher happened to nominate me for a prestigious local award (which I won in December, and updated my admissions rep about yesterday in an email), and with it she wrote me a congratulations letter; the information she wrote in the letter really revealed that she knows my personality and whatnot really well, and I feel that a letter from her would add character to my application. Thanks so much for the information on the deadline everyone!!

I understand your frustrations with being Deferred from Harvard, but you should spend your time improving your other essays for other Universities that you may be applying to, not chasing your first choice. If you were to send the letter of recommendation post 1/1/2013, I know that Harvard is lenient with their “strict” deadlines. Obviously, don’t be too late with sending your letter, but it’s okay if it is a few days late.

Good luck, ckyfy63a!
