Deferred Students: What updates did you send it?

Hi! If you were deferred from SCEA, what updates are you sending in now, or will you have by Jan 20?

Just my midyear report :\ School starts on the 15th for me, so I doubt I’ll have anything worthwhile to send in 5 days. Tsk.

What about you?

Sorry I meant “send in”

Yeah, I don’t really have anything significant that changed from November to January. I might send a longer version of my research abstract, and maybe like a statement of interest or something. My school sends the midyear report automatically.

An extra non-academic recommendation letter (which happened to be glowing - my recommender gave it to me to read), a letter from myself as a statement of interest/updates, and an interview. I was invited to interview just a few days after I submitted my application on Oct. 31 but I couldn’t make it due to being overseas. They’re currently trying to set me up with an interviewer in the country where I am.

I wasn’t contacted for an interview :frowning: Wish I had been, though, I think it would have been fun, I’m not all that great at showing my personality through writing.
I’d send them a letter as well, but I’d have no idea where to start, so better not…

I was thinking of sending a letter with quick updates about all my classes, and my IB senior projects. I also have an interesting family connection I didn’t mention before. Do you think this is a good idea?

What does interesting family connection mean? Someone who went to Harvard? Your parents are the only ones that count as legacies, and admission officers don’t care about others. Grandparents, maybe, but nothing beyond that.

If your cousins cousins cousins girlfriend is senator for Iowa, forget it. Nobody could care less. You need to make good judgement decisions about this; how can an admission officer take this piece of information and make my app more convincing?

@GordontheGecko - Actually something to do with my parents. So I do know what I’m doing.

Is anyone sending in an additional essay, maybe one written for a different school? If so, did you already send in an optional essay?

I didn’t send an optional essay, but I just might send the one I wrote for Pomona, I liked it.
Do we just write it in the email body for the fileroom? I have no idea how to go about this

@alisyn - that’s what I’m thinking. I know someone else said they weren’t able to attach a document, so what else can we do? It’s kinda odd that they didn’t give clear directions.

Yeah, I know, faced the same issue with my transcript. It’s frustrating. I really wanna do my best with the thing, but give me a hint Harvard people, come on.

Waitingforivy:

You need to use good judgement. To be more clear, anything beyond a parent legacy is meaningless. Depending on what it is, it will hurt your application because it will counter one or more criteria’s officers are looking for.

Parent helped a prof’s son? No…best chance is to get the prof to help. Parent donated? Bad idea. Parent went to summer school? Implying a false legacy! Uncle legacy? They don’t care, seriously. If it doesn’t make your case more convincing, you’re not helping yourself. Good luck.

When does Harvard want updates by? I’m waiting on hopeful STS results, which will be known on the 25th. Is that too late?

I think yes, cause they said to send them by the 20th :expressionless: Maybe you can send a projected score?

How do we send update? email or fax or regular mail?

I am planning to use this form and select “Additions to Application” under the drop down.

http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/contact/fileroom.html

Waitingforivy, you sound like you have something interesting to say, to me. Good luck!

I’m sending in two recommendations from retired teachers that I couldn’t get in touch with until now and a letter saying about what has changed since I applied (such as winning a competition and another honor, and getting first chair in a regional music group).

Quick questions; would the two recommendations be too much? They’re phenominal (one is from a music teacher, the other from a research one).

Ok, I just sent it through the fileroom - wow that messed up the formatting. It’s okay, hopefully my interviewer will send the properly formatted one.

I sent my update materials on Sunday. Just wonder whether you will get confirmation e-mail after you sent your update through the fileroom?
