deferred students

I was curious as to how many people were deferred from ED. In my deferral letter, it said that usually around 15-20 deferred students will get in RD each year, and that stat isn't too promising. So if anyone has that data...

An admissions officer told me that about 35% of the applicants who were not accepted were deferred. Which means, with 616 ED applicants - 225 accepted, there are 391 times .35, or about 137, deferred. Which also means that between ~11 and 15% of those who were deferred will be accepted.

Hope that helps. I was very frustrated with the lack of statistics about this, so I asked directly. Good luck!

Thanks. It definitely helps to have a little better idea about my chances, however depressing that chance may be.

Hey, Brittany–did they say anything about deferred Questbridge kids? :)

Only me in particular. I see you’re the mom of a deferred Quest applicant. I have to say, they truly love Quest kids. The odds are not good for a deferred applicant (though it is still possible, everyone, so don’t give up hope yet!), but I would venture to say they are ever-so-slightly better if you were Quest. These are simply my own thoughts, however, coming from various conversations with my favorite admissions officer. Speaking of whom, has your daughter been in touch with the “diversity coordinator” in charge of Quest students? If not, send me a message and I’ll give you her email address. She is absolutely incredible and has no trouble providing insight as well as comfort. Best of luck to your daughter – perhaps I’ll see her on campus next fall – and congratulations to her on Colgate AMS!

a 15% acceptance isn’t too far from the RD acceptance. not bad.
