If we are deferred, do we need to submit a new app? Or can we send new essays? Or rec letters? or updated versions of the Common App?

You cannot submit a new app. You can send updates though such as awards, new achievements etc…

But no new essays or new versions of Common App.

Do allowable updates include more letters of recommendation?

I thought you could send updates anytime though, regardless of app status or whether you were deferred or not (before an accept/decline decision is given).
I think you can update stuff though, as in also send different essays and such. I mean, if you were to do that as a regular applier I believe you can sometimes? Though the extra hassle for the admit counselors doesn’t bode too well usually.

I don’t see how you could submit extra essays. Your essay is already attached to your application online. Forcing them to read a new essay, and then ignore your old essay when they revisit your app is asking a lot. I’ve never heard of anyone doing this and don’t believe it happens.

Updating applications means things like new awards or an additional LOR if you were deferred (though I’m not recommending this given Ys stated policy about them).

New essays and other changes to your application are not allowed.

What is Yale’s stated policy about new letters of recommendation?

^^Sorry, I should have worded that more precisely, I was referring to supplemental LORs in general, not specifically ones sent later in the application process. They will accept 1 supplemental, but strongly advise only to do so if it adds substantially to your application.

For what it’s worth, I think that sometimes the disadvantages of sending in too much stuff can be a little overstated. About a month after I was deferred last year, I sent in a (unpublished) 25-pages scientific research paper and a second supplemental letter of recommendation written by the biologist who had mentored me during that project. I also wrote a brief letter at another time to update Yale about a few other new accomplishments. I have no idea whether anyone actually read the paper I sent in, or whether these materials actively helped my case. But the point is that they clearly didn’t hurt my case too much (if at all), because I ended up being accepted in the RD round.

Of course, what entomom said about new essays not being allowed still stands as correct advice, as does the part about new LORs only being advisable if they add a substantial and new perspective to your application.

If I get deferred SCEA in December, should I send in my 1st semester transcript? Also, I’m a National Merit Semi-Finalist, should I tell them if I become a finalist in February? Though I assume they would have other ways of knowing.

You are required to send in a mid-year report if you are in the RD pool. Yes, it would be good to update if you make NMF, while they have many NMFs, any additional awards should be reported.
