I am really disappointed. I cannot even explain how bummed I am. I guess I am glad that I wasn't rejected but I can't take another 2 months of waiting and have the possibility of getting rejected. Does anyone know how good a chance people who were deferred have of actually getting in? I saw some other people on this board with identical stats and they got in! Damn, this sucks.

My stats were:

In-state
GPA - 3.9 uw/ 4.3 w
SAT - 1270
Decent EC's , no leadership positions (4 yrs lacrosse, 2 yrs service club, part time job)
Good Rec's and essays

UNC is by far my top choice and when I saw that I had to wait another 2 months my heart sank. Good luck to all the other "deferrees" and I'm sorry for all those that had their hearts set on UNC but were rejected.

I got deferred too. It sucks man. Now we have to wait two more months! This is garbage man. They already made us wait till January 28th just to hear back for early action. Anyways stats in case you might be wondering:

Out of State (NY) White
1370, 4.0
Lax Captain, varsity soccer and track
pretty good other ECs i guess
SATIIs: MathIIC-730, Writing-630, Global-730
Good essays- or at least i thought so (lol)

Life sucks right now! Power to the people who got deferred man, stay strong. Hey I guess its better than rejection though.

well guys its sucks you got deferred, but don't give up hope. Last year 2 of my friends were deferred, 1 was later accepted and the other was deferred again (she just decided to give up and go to state). I'm not sure if that makes you feel any better, just remember you were not rejected, all they are doing is running you through again but in the regular decision pool. Good luck

hm..thinking..well..ive been up all night..i couldn't get to sleep..carolina got to me..GOOD..well..i was just wondering if: a.there is a difference btw wait listed and deferrals and b. what percent of deferred people get accepted?? hmmm?!!!

good luck to all...i got rejected, i guess im not too upset since its not my top choice and it's good to just get it over with, but no one wants to be rejected. Deferral=being pushed into the regular pool for regular admission decision. Waitlist=applied for regular admission, but they don't know if they want to accept you so they wait until they get responses from the accepted students and then will accept you if there are enough spots..(waitlist majorly stinks).

so just make things clear..on the letter it will say defer or waitlist? in writing? plain and simply? if you got wait listed--it will SAY waitlist?? and waitlist is for RD only? not ED?

if you applied regular admission you can only get waitlisted not deferred. if you applied early you can get deferred into the regular pool and you can get waitlisted from that. deferred=early admissions
waitlist=regular admissions
hth.

"To give you an idea of how things may resolve this year, we can tell you that last year (2003) we deferred 21% of the early applicants, and eventually admitted 29% of them."

Assuming the 29% deferral admit rate is the same for in and out of state, that puts the overall OOS acceptance rate for EA about 19.6% - less than Berkeley's OOS 21%! Most of you guys probably have great shots at other colleges.

POO i got deferred too.
OOS (seattle), asian female
sat1: 1380
sat2: 700, 800,700
gpa uw: 3.84
Top 10% of class at a good private school
many ec's and such
solid recs

BOO, now im really bitter and dont wanna go to unc at all...but what the heck are u supposed to do whne you get deferred? (send your midyear grades obviously)...But do they want anything else? LIke a list of recent activities/community service or anything? Or no.

Look at this guys...a user who posted in the official decision posting..This guy has the same SAT score as me except my 670 is in verbal and 600 in math. I have a 3.9 uw gpa / 4.3 weighted. I'm in-state and I was deferred. What kind of crap is that?

"Sat I: 1270
Math- 670, verbal 600

No Sat II's
GPA (unweighted) 3.3
GPA (weighted) 4.11

My daughter was deferred ED last year. Her grades and scores etc. were stellar. I think that some deferral is to say ..hey if you lived here you would be in, but you dont so this is a nice way of saying sorry. It was really painful for her after to waiting after ED to then be Waitlisted..
Anyway she went elsewhere and LOVES it..so it worked out just great.
My thoughts to you all waiting is to fall in love with another school and get excited about it..But good luck!
