So uh, what does that mean? Should I assume that I will be deferred again (or worse, gasps) since I was deemed unworthy once and move on with my life or what (is this very likely in this situation?)? Obviously Wesleyan was my numero uno and I want nothing more to get in! Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I'm not looking for a 'chance me' thread (lets assume I was remotely qualified), just trying to get some more insight on what this actually means since this is probably a unique kind of deferral (according to the lack of information available when searched for on the google machine).

Also is there anyone else in this situation?

Basically you’re not good enough for Admissions to want you outright, but you’re not that bad either.
Think of yourself as an average-chick-on-layaway at a bar as the guys scan the rest of the scene for cuter gals.

I have never heard of any student at any school being deferred to ED2! But obviously you’re very close - I would send Wesleyan ANY updates you have (first marking period grades - if they’re good - any awards you won - have your guidance counselor call on your behalf, etc)

Keep up hope! I have a friend who was deferred last year and accepted just because they wanted to see her grades at the semester. so, keep your grades up, and get your guidance councillor to talk to them.
I hope you get in :)

Imagine the scene around the AdComm table in late November (in the tradition of The Gatekeepers) :

AdCom1: “I just did a first read on this dude Deferred4Life. Take a look.”
AdCom2: “Deferred4Life? Hmmm. Doesn’t sound like the most optimistic prospie, does he?”
AdCom1: “Well, look. He’s got decent SATs–above our admit average last year, at least. Great essay–talked about the time he helped that old lady across the street, and she turned out to be Bill Gates’ mother!”
AdCom2: “Wow, for real?”
AdCom1: “For real, lookee, here–he did an internship last summer up at Microsoft’s Headquarters.”
AdCom2: “Well,he sure sounds Wesleyan to me!”
AdCom1: “Yeah, he’s close. Damn close. But in Spring Semester junior year he slacked off a bit, just pulled a 3.2.”
AdCom2: “Oh, that’s not too good, usually boys’ grades go progressively higher as they get older in high school.”
AdCom1: “That’s a good point. But I have an idea. Why don’t we defer him and see how he does this semester.”
AdCom2: “So you wanna put him in the ‘Consider for Spring 13 file’?”
AdCom1: “Nah, I think he’s too good. I’d hate to lose him to Swarthmore or Brown during RD. I’m gonna pitch to Nancy that we consider him for ED2.”
AdCom2: “You know, she’s only okayed that three times in the 12 years she’s been Director of Admissions.”
Adcom1: “I’m gonna pitch her on this kid. I feel in my bones he’s Wesleyan, and if he comes up big this semester, he should be a slam dunk for ED2.”

Hey guys! I was also deferred to early decision two, so I guess we’ll see what happens in a couple of months! You guys are all really awesome and deserve to go there. Let’s not think negative thoughts right now… I know it sucks but we’ll make it through! I think they just don’t know enough information about us because I would have accepted you all in a heartbeat! Keep on working hard in school, and I’ll see you guys here February 10th so we can wait out the week!

I do think that the usual reason for ED II is that Admission wants to see first semester grades if they have fallen a bit lately or your GPA is a little lower than their average. EDII is so much better psychologically than just deferred to RD. What I am concerned about, however, is that Wes will have a really strong RD pool arrive in January, which they will be looking at in comparison to the ED II applications. There is no advantage anymore of ED I where there were many fewer applications to which to be compared. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

Also, if Wesleyan really just wants to see a deferred applicant’s grades, why do we have to wait until February 15?

ED II still has a higher chance of getting accepted because they have pledged to go to the school while those applying RD have not. They still see that Wesleyan is your first choice. Just keep your grades up, keep calling them (not just your counselor cause they need to see that YOU are interested in the process) and keep updating them with any new information about yourself they might find interesting and useful.

Definitely going to study like mad to ace my finals. Does anyone think that retaking SAT would be helpful? Next exam is not until Jan. 26. My SAT was strong, but my grades were below the median.
