Hey guys,
I had some rough news today when I found out that I was deferred from the University of Michigan College of Engineering. I know that my stats weren't phenominal but I still thought in comparison to some I have been seeing get in at my school I had a very strong shot.

My stats were:
28 ACT Composite (28 Math Subscore)
3.9 UW GPA
Limited Extra-Curriculars but was deeply involved.
White Caucasian

What I really wanted to know is exactly what course of action I should take. I am currently really broken up about this as I have been wanting to go to Michigan since I was in the 3rd grade. I was thinking of retaking the ACT on the April date to try and raise my low score. I really am looking for some advice since I am really down in the dumps about this decision.

that's weird you got deferrerd this late in the game. i guess taking the ACT would help again (whatever happened to your SAT?). write a letter to michigan explaining how much you love the school, how long you've loved the school, and how it's your first choice. expressed interest should help. also, keep them informed with whatever you're doing in school, the community, and EC's in general. best of luck.

On the deferal sheets, it states that nothing you do will affect their decisions except your senior semester grades. If you send them that kind of stuff, will they even look at it?

ouch, well i didn't know about that statement(i was accepted, never deferred). i still think it's worth a shot; why not try, you know? if it's what you really want, try everything you can. you have nothing to lose. at the worst, they won't look at it. at the best, they'll look at it and highly consider it.

It is useless honestly to take the April ACT, because they need to have all of their deferral decisions out by the first week in April at the very latest, so taking it then and giving the ACT company a few weeks to grade and send it to U of M is only pointless. Let's just hope you aren't slacking off during your last senior year.

did u get a letter? when was ur app completed? and can i ask u ur stats although u probably don't feel like it? i'm getting worried now.
umich was my first application and as a result was the least professional applciation that i did compared to my RD schools.
i wonder if i'll get deferred. My stats r 3.9 UW GPA, 1530/2210 SAT, 800,790,790 SAT2( i know they don't look but it can only help) and some ECs and came to the US last year.

Geniusapple, what probably ended up hurt you is your ACT math. I heard that the CoE really wants to see a 30+ on the ACT math. Obviously, there is no cuttoff score, so you have a chance, but if there is one thing that got you deferred, it is your 28 on the ACT math. I agree that it is strange that you got this deferral so late in the process, but this year is different than other years because Michigan is going to play the wait-and-see game. The last couple of years, Michigan's yield rate has been 45%. If Michigan has a 45% yield this year, it would mean that Michigan will accept fewer than 12,000 applicants. And since Michigan is probably going to have more than 25,000 applicants, we are looking at a 45% acceptance rate this year.

They formally deferred people who have already been waiting a long time. They didn't want to leave those people hanging on without ANY news, so a select group of people whose apps have been in the pipeline for quite a while got deferral letters. Their situation is not necessarily different from people who haven't got a letter--it simply reflects that they've been waiting a longer time.

4.26W / 3.91UW / 3.85UMich GPA
31 ACT (33 ENG, 29 MATH, 33 READ, 30 SCI)
Rank: 3/475 (Top 1%)
In-State
Limited EC's and AP's
I'm Arab American (Is that an URM?)

I applied to LSA December 20 and everything was received January 4.

What do you guys think my chances are now that I've officially been deferred?

Do you think there's anything I should do (send letters, recommendations, etc.?)

Also, our school offers something called the William K. Brehm Scholarship (4 years full in-state tuition)...I have a very good shot at that if I'm accepted...Should I mention that in any letters I may send?

ALI I think you screwed yourself by applying so late. If you had applied earlier I'm almost certain you would have gotten in. Good luck to you though. You probably deserve to be at Michigan.

I am very surprised that you were deferred ALI9869. I am an OOS applicant and I had similar stats to you if not worse and I was accepted to LSA. I did apply in October and wasn't accepted until January, I wouldn't give up hope though. I think that you are a good candidate and still have a shot at admission to Michigan.
