Thank you, dsmo, for the heartfelt response. Part of the reason I applied so late was the lack of awareness I had for just how late I was actually applying. It sucks to go to a high school where there is virtually no preparation for students applying for college and where the majority of counselors are misinformed (about nearly everything it seems :)). I shouldn't complain though, I guess I should have known better anyway.

Knows11, you can't imagine how shocked I was to receive a deferral, especially this late in the game! Thanks for the encouragement, though, I'll continue working hard to maybe turn that deferral into an acceptance.

or u could just be like screw umich and go somewhere else ;)

I wish I had that option. I haven't really applied to many colleges (3 including Michigan) and I am really counting on the Brehm scholarship (I don't qualify for financial aid and parents' income is wayyyy lower than needed...sucks to be lower-middle-class :(). If I don't get accepted I'll probably end up going somewhere nearby and working my way through shool. Plus, I'm really dying to go to Michigan; I absolutely love Ann Arbor there's just too many benefits.

i know someone who was deferred yesterday - with worse stats than either ali or genius. does this mean they didn't evaluate the applications at all? why such a range of the people who were deferred.

By "don't qualify for financial aid" do you mean you are a non-citizen?

No, I just meant that my EFC is too high to qualify me for any federal aid.

if your EFC is so high, why do you say your below middle class? IM BELOW MIDDLE CLASS!! lol my EFC is 1200 lol i suck

I'm a parent and several years ago my son and his best friend applied to colleges. My son applied to several. His friend applied to one!! UC Irvine. His older brother was attending that school and since younger son had same test scores and GPA, the parents thought, "No problem". Well, my son got in and his friend did not! So, they appealed to admissions....and he got in.
It's worth a try, and good luck.

does everyone who applied get 'deferred' at michigan? i havent heard of one person being actually rejected

i got deferred too

I actually said I was lower middle class, not lower than middle class. I'm probably closer to mid-middle class though. Either way, the government ain't givin' me a penny...

i too haven't heard of anyone being rejected.

Yes, people get rejected and people already received denies on their Fall 2006 applications.

And no, U-M doesn't send defer letters to students whose apps haven't been evaluated (except for the type of defer where they tell you they aren't going to evaluate you until they see 7th semester grades).

UMich asked to see my 7th semester grades, but they told me they had given my application a comprehensive and individualized review but need more information.

Im still waiting for mine. Did you guys recieve your decisions by email? I applied for summer term so hopefully I'll have a chance getting OOS.

I still haven't heard back. I sent out the app end of december and it was completed arond 1/17, according to the wolverine access.

I had 2270, and 4.0 GPA (1/517), and i thought my essays were decent. I didn't think I would be rejected, but this is taking forever and I'm getting worried, especially because most of my friends have gotten their letters already (all of them were accepted).

outofstateorbust: michigan will email you about your "admissions decision" and it should be an acceptance.

rosenkavalier: i'm really surprised that michigan didn't jump your bones really quick haha

well, I got into to UCLA but got deferred from michigan? I also found out today I'm waitlisted at washu, so I'm binging on ice cream in like 20 degree weather to make myself feel better. I must say my confidence level is completely shot, and have no hope for all the other schools I still have to hear from
