Don’t get down guys. Tons of you will be admitted in the new year. Seriously. Last year it was like an avelanche of acceptances!
Got deferred but honestly expected it. I am more than qualified with incredible recs and solid essays, but its so hard to get in EA. I got denied from another EA school which was a huge shock, so I really just wanted an acceptance to have over break. It just sucks that we are stuck in anxious limbo for a few months.
@T05L01 If you are truly interested in engineering I would not switch. However, LSA is very different from CoE even though they say it isn’t. CoE at UMich is one of the best in the nation and therefore is HIGHLY competitive. LSA is still competitive but not at the same level as CoE.However if engineering is what you want to do I wouldn’t switch.
Last years thread talks about sending letters of interest and midyear reports. Supposedly that is the best way to ensure an acceptance. Thoughts on when/should we be doing these things?
I would imagine that many of the deferrals were simply because they didn’t have enough time to read through all of them. Everyone from my school who applied (one who was just accepted to Princeton) was deferred today, so don’t get too down on yourselves just because you were deferred.
@T05L01 I was thinking the same think as you. I wanted to study biomedical engineering for premed but I’m not sure if I’ll love it. I could easily pick a major in LSA. Lmk if you want to discuss this more!
FOR THOSE OF YOU DEFERRED LIKE ME: this doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. this doesn’t mean youre not going to college. this doesnt mean you weren’t good enough for umichigan.
This means there is still hope. This means they want to see how much you want to go to umich by trying harder this semester/trimester and getting better consistent grades. This means there is a school out there that is a better fit. Stay strong and know that you are one of many many students deferred. Instead of being upset over this, smile and know your future is still heading to success, but taking a few detours.
I applied with a 24 ACT score. I’m surprised I got deferred and not rejected. Do they send any rejections for EA?
Well I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m going into overdrive for the rest of this semester!
ps: be glad you’re not like my classmate. Her dream school basically told her to take the SAT for a third time for a better shot after being deferred
My daughter was deferred last year and then admitted on February 5th. She did send a letter of continued interest the day after she was deferred letting the school know that it was her first choice and that she would attend if admitted. It should also include any new info since you applied…for example if you became a national merit finalist or maybe acheived something in a sport or activity this fall. She sent it to her regional admissions counselor. Hope that helps…best of luck!
My S got deferred from CoE. He got 35 ACT, 1520 SAT, 3.97 GPA, and 5AP, OOS from MN
I am deferred…international student…Now i look at the US NEWS rankings and find out that Purdue University is nothing less, just 3 or 4 ranks behind in CoE…now I really have a discontinued interest in UMich. I guess I will go to Purdue. I even got deffered from UIUC.
just sent my letter
Yeah like I literally doubled up in science for three years and have about the same situation as you @Filthy_Frank. Pretty disappointed, but I’m assuming they looked mostly at numbers for the first batch. Let all those Ivy leaguers turn Mich down and then maybe we’ll get our chance.
what is this “letter”, is this just an email, and how do you reach your local/regional counselor? phone or email?
THERE ARE AT LEAST 2 DEFERRAL LETTERS. MY FRIEND DID NOT GET THE
"Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review. An official communication will be sent to your email address on file.
While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2017.
Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ?s about the admission process and what to do next.
We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year."
LETTER. IF THERE ARE 2 LETTERS, THAT MUST MEAN THERE’S A GOOD AND BAD LETTER.
The other letter reads:
"Dear ____: Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2017. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.
The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors take into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2016-2017 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at XXX-XXX-XXXX"
Which letter is the good one and which one is bad?
i think the first one is good
Hey guys, I was deferred with a 2350 SAT and a strong weighted GPA at an extremely competitive public high school out of state. I noticed that a lot of the people on this thread were deferred with high scores and impressive grades. Clearly, Michigan is incredibly competitive, yet I was under the impression that there decision making process was still heavily quantitative. I was wondering if we are seeing some manifestation of Tufts Syndrome? Is this common at Michigan or should I be worried about an internal problem in my application?
Hi guys! I’m pretty disappointed/surprised that I was deferred from LSA. I’m a national merit semi finalist, 36 ACT, 4.00 unweighted GPA, 5’s on all my APs, swim team captain, and I’ve done a lot of science fair stuff statewide/nationally in addition to other extracurriculars. In my opinion, my essays and recommendations were also pretty good. Does anyone have any guesses as to why I was deferred/how I could improve my chances of getting in?
