@riverbirch and @HRSMom My daughter just told me one of her sorority sister’s (from Chicago, top selective enrollment highschool) little brother was deferred. Both of their parents went to Michigan. Very unusual. However, my daughter also rattled off about 20 other kids who younger sibs were accepted, all out of state.
If his stats are high, a letter will help a ton. Maybe they are not high enough?
@HRSMom prob not high enough and prob did not apply to LSA. I thought I read somewhere Ross is doing something different this year.
The kids get an acceptance to LSA first, then Ross decides. If not high enough for Michigan legacy, good luck to him with Ross!
yes, same boat here. deferred, COE, 4.0 / 5.09, SAT 1550, OOS (North Carolina), had a really good HAIL interview
Does anybody think that sending a letter of interest isn’t a good idea? In the “good” email it says that the most successful candidates don’t send more than necessary. I want to send one, but not if it’ll hurt me
You can read about how to craft a letter of interest here. http://collegeapps.about.com/od/theartofgettingaccepted/fl/How-to-Write-a-Letter-of-Continued-Interest.htm
@as1799 My deferral thing said that too but I don’t think it will hurt at this point.
@as1799 They are a public school so I don’t think they track interest. I don’t think I will be sending a letter because of this.
@achat0913 Good Luck to you. Please let us know when you are accepted
@gobuemom Best of luck to you as well! Hoping for some good news in the coming months.
Hey guys, I think the earliest that the first batch will be released is January 15th. I think the next batch will be released Early February (perhaps the 5th) and the possible final batch is in mid March or Early April I believe. Also, looking at last year’s thread, I think acceptances and waitlists are the most common responses from the University. They still give out relatively few rejections. A rejection for them is essentially not responding if you are removed from the waitlist which is cruel. Please add anymore info about possible release dates, or anything else if I’ve left something out. Thanks!
@Collegebound293 where did you get these dates from?
@achat0913 they do track interest:

I was seeing what was earlier posted about the two differ emails. I was wondering if you guys have an opinion on which is better. I received the first but the second seems more personal and better. Maybe one of them is virtually a “nice” rejection letter.
"Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review. An official communication will be sent to your email address on file.
While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2017.
Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ?s about the admission process and what to do next.
We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year."

"Dear ____: Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2017. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.
The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors take into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2016-2017 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at XXX-XXX-XXXX"
Let me know your opinions…
@FOLeo49a Supposedly the 1st one is the “better” one but reading both it’s hard to tell.
@APlennox @FOLeo49a The first one sounds better but everyone seems to have gotten it. I feel like that less common one would be the “better” one…
@FOLeo49a It seems to me the first one is better because the second one states that they are going to look at your app again with the RD people and not before then. The first one at least gives some hope that they may look at your app again sooner. Not totally sure though, maybe I’m just thinking this because I’m hoping its true (I got the first one)
I got deferred with a 1320 SAT and a 3.78 gpa. I applied to nursing and I’m in state too. I was with my friend who applied LSA and she got deferred too. Actually, nearly everyone at my school got a deferral except for about 4 kids compared to the 10 or so from last year. One of my friends is #2 in our class, another is #6, and one scored a 34 on his ACT and they got deferred too. All of us are pretty involved too with really good ECs. Last year one kid got in with a 27 ACT. Kids like us got deferred but kids with lower scores, gpas, and few ECs got in so we’re all really confused as to what it is that Michigan wants from us. Within my county, there was overall a really small number of kids getting accepted which I thought was strange.
@urfavmurse
What was the overall accept rate last year at your school? I’d judge from that. Too hard to say why the defer sometimes. But it’s just deferral, not a denial:)
@HRSMom
Last year, we had about 10 kids who got in for EA and another 5 or so who got in regular. I know there was about 15 or so who ended up going plus a few kids who went to different schools. I don’t know what our overall acceptance rate was but I want to say that about 20 kids got in
