What is the difference between being deferred and being waitlisted?

If you apply ED and they need more time to evaluate your application or they want to see other applications before they make a decision they will DEFER you to the RD round. If, after the RD round they don't have enough space for you but you are close to being accepted, they will WAITLIST you. However, at some schools they don't accept anybody from the waitlist whereas at other schools they accept quite a few.

Deferred is the response to an ED or EA application and means decision is deferred until they consider the RD applicant pool. Uusualyl deferred applicants do not get admitted in RD but occasionally they do. Waitlistedis when you get put on the waitlist in the RD round. Veru few people get in off the waitlist at most schools most years, but some do (in single or low double digits).

Well i guess that leads me to another question. What is ED, EA, and RD?

ED is early decision, EA is early action, RD is regular decision

Early Action/ Early Decision applications are usually due around December 1st, and each college has a different policy. If a school uses Early Decision and your application is accepted, you are locked into going to that college, and you are required to withdraw all of your other applications. There is no such binding requirement for Early Action, you just know sooner than everyone else.

^ Many EA/ED applications are due way before December 1st. Mine was due November 1st and other people I know had to submit sometime in October.
