Deferred, what are my chances now?

I’ll have a 3.9 GPA for my seventh semester. Three AP’s. Very tough schedule. No blow off classes. President of 2 clubs too. Great essay. Great improvement. I even wrote a letter of continued interest to the assistant director of admissions, and he said that he respects my consistency in wanting to be admitted to MSU. Do you think I’ll be accepted?

You applied early decision to Michigan State??

It has rolling admissions, right? And does not offer ED. I’m not sure how you would be deferred from rolling admissions. Maybe this is a thing but I’m not familiar with it.

Yes it’s a thing. I got deferred and they do have rolling admission. They’re just going to look at my application again when I send my semester grades in.

It’s getting harder to get into MSU I guess. My GPA at the time was a 3.39 and I have a 23 ACT. My GPA should raise to a 3.5 though if I finish this semester with a 3.9, which is most likely going to happen.

Oh well . . . it looks like they want to see stellar academic performance from you. Your original post says that you have a 3.9 gpa. Now you say that you have a 3.39 gpa. That explains why the deferral.

MSU’s average GPA is 3.68. It seems that you will need to raise your unweighted GPA to at least that level, or pretty close. Can you also raise your ACT?? Can you practice that more?

No what I was saying is that my cumulative GPA that I originally sent to them was a 3.39. You know what a cumulative GPA is right? They requested my 7th semester grades. My seventh semester GPA is a 3.9. That’s good academic improvement to me at least.

Tone to someone who is trying to help you. Please watch that as you move forward. When in doubt make it really polite. And assume that it’s always in doubt.

This sounds like you have 7-straight 3.9 semesters. It could also mean that you have a 3.9 only one semester, your seventh, but you presented yourself as 3.9 GPA with a lot of ECs and leadership and did not mention your low GPA of 6 semesters. Thus the mystery of why weren’t you accepted. Yes you have improvement but it’s much shorter than the track record of 3.39. They don’t know if you have any ability to sustain that high average. They probably want to see if it holds before making their decision in your favor.

Build a steady track record for the Adcoms. Be gracious in all of your correspondence. Send short updates as appropriate to let them know that you are working toward your goal of admission.

Best of luck.

Thanks.

You bet. Best of luck with your studies and your future plans.

MSU recalculated your GPA based on core courses. You would need to recalculate your GPA to take out certain electives to get a better reflection of your GPA. If you improved your GPA by taking a bunch of electives then it might not be helping you as much as you think. I don’t remember exactly what admissions told us when we visited in October but I recall certain electives are not factored in when MSU recalculates your GPA from your transcripts. I remember a lot of kids and their parents eyes get pretty big on that statement.

I took all very important classes this year, no blowoff electives. I recalculated my GPA for the 3.39 cumulative but this semester I won’t have to. I wouldn’t imagine that they’d be recalculating my current schedule:

Earth science
Honors Michigan history
AP stats
12 Grade English literature
AP psychology
AP European history
Political leadership (a selective class where you volunteer in a political organization in the community)

Who is the Assistant Director of Admissions? And how did you contact them? I found the board of admissions for the College of Law but nothing else. I’m a prospective transfer student but would like to show more interest in admission and ask direct questions to someone who actually makes the decisions.

In response to your question, do extremely well in your AP’s, do nothing but study and get atleast B+'s in all of them and good AP tests. With grade boost your GPA should almost rise above a 4.0. I’m not sure how you have been currently deferred as they usually accept anyone with higher than a 3.5. But if you are really determined you should have absolutely no issues getting into Michigan State.

Hi, sorry I’m just getting back to you. My semester just finished today and I obtained a 3.9 for this semester. My cumulative GPA was a 3.37 but it should be going up after this semester’s grades. Hopefully I get in, I worked very hard and obtained 4 A’s in my reugular classes and 3 B’s in my AP’s.

The director of admissions is Terrence Brown. I’m not quite sure where I got his email from, but just try navigating on the directory on MSU.EDU and you should find it.

I wish you the best of luck.
