deferred. what are my chances?

I know there have been other threads started about this, but I was wondering if anyone had any specific ideas about Dartmouth. I was deferred ED, and I still really want to go there.

SAT 2260
(US Hist: 760; Math II 750; English Lit: 750)

GPA 3.8
Rank (top 10%, i think, -really strong high school)
Really difficult schedule
AP: all 5s

E.C.: Model UN (co-president), school newspaper, Debate Club, Environmental Club, painting (i sent in a portfolio)
-I have volunteered every summer of high school
-I have had two highly selective art internships
teacher, counselor, and peer recs were all great.

Any ideas? should I try to make a contact in the admissions office? Thanks guys!!

If you're deferred early, you'll have to fight an uphill battle. There's really not much you can do now, unless you have something killer. I must say I have no idea why you got deferred...

The admissions officer we spoke to last year told us that deferred students have a one in ten chance of admission, but I have heard of students who are later admitted. My S wasn't one of them, but he is wildly happy at Williams.

Make sure the school knows you are still interested - and yes, definitely keep in contact with the admissions through phone calls.

Your ECs killed you. There is no point contact admission office. What do you think they will tell you?

Good Luck with other applications! :)

thanks for the advice guys. just a question for ajayc, what about my ecs do you think hurt me? just wondering...

happy holidays everyone!!

Well you need to be involved in a bunch of them. And be good at them! Thats all!:)

Focus on the RD apps. With your profile, I'm sure you'll get in someplace good.

^ I agree. Don't neglect your RD apps!

sunshiner,

I respectfully disagree with ajayc on ECs.

I do not think one, necessarily, has to be involved in a lot of them. Rather than breadth, one can go for depth. If one can show real commitment and accomplishment in a couple, it is as good, perhaps, better than being involved in "a dog's breakfast" of activities where one risks of spreading oneself too thin. I think adcoms like to see consistency, coupled with progressively greater accomplishments over time, in one's ECs (not dissimilar to academics).

Your art commitment is very real and highly impressive. It is great you're submitting the Arts Supplement. If you can find a way to weave together your Model UN and school newspaper involvement with Debate Club and Environmental Club so that a theme or two emerges and links to a "passion" that would be great (i.e. they cohere into some sensible whole).

I agree with tetrisfan -- you are a super candidate and will find someplace great. Time now to focus on RD. BTW, I think Princeton would very much like your art background. Huge commitment there to integrating "art" more fully with academics. I would hit this hard as part of your application (if you make one).

Don't forget to write D and communicate your continued strong interest in them.

All the best.
