Deferred? What should I do now?

I just got a letter back from Pittsburgh and they told me that I've been deferred. What should I do now? Should I send in my mid-year report (I actually did pretty well this year, mostly 90s and above)? They gave me an optional essay to write. Should I send in more recommendations?

What are my chances of getting in now?

Here are my stats:
GPA: ~3.0 (84-85)
SAT: 1140/1710 (M:630 V:510 W:570)
I have over 250 hours in community service.
I'm captain of the Golf Team and have been on it since sophmore year.
I wrestled for Varsity Wrestling last year.
I have a good handful of extracirricular activities.
I think I wrote a pretty good essay, about 7-8 people told me so.

Your guidance counselor might be of some help here. Perhaps s/he could call Pitt on your behalf. I think your strong mid-year report would make a good impression. Either you or your guidance counselor might ask admissions directly about additional recs (some schools find more than 3 to be overkill but I'm not sure about Pitt.) Do your best on the optional essay and good luck!
