I received my letter of deferral today and was wondering if I should be persistent in gaining admission to the FSU or just simply let it go. How many students do they generally accept after they defer them?

I spoke with an admissions representative about a week ago over the phone for about 15 minutes a day or two before admissions decisions were available. They pretty much told me not to expect an acceptance letter (which I wasn't) but not to give up because she saw my situation as very unique and something that most students at FSU had not endured.

I would love to be accepted there, but only as a back-up choice if I decide to attend college in-state, which is highly unlikely unless I am accepted to UF. But I would also hate to take a spot from another student whose dream was to always attend FSU and be a Florida State seminole. Undoubtedly, I would be honored to be a part of the FSU community, but it is not where my heart is.

So, should I keep pushing or not? I don't think I'll be admitted mainly because I did not meet their SAT cut-offs, but I hope they take a holistic approach and consider the package as a whole and see how much I have overcome. My current SAT scores (which weren't considered since they weren't received on time from the January test) are 1710/2400 1080/1600. Math: 490 Critical Reading: 590 Writing: 630 Essay: 10/12. I improved them by 190 points in one month since the December test, in which they were 1520/2400 1020/1600 Math: 440 Critical Reading: 580 Writing: 500 Essay 8/12

Any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

on the one hand you sound like you might want to go to fsu, but then you say its a backup school for you.

I would say that you would have a chance of getting in as a deferred candidate, but it will require some work and effort on your part. If FSU is not your "dream school" and is your second choice, I would most likely let it go and be happy that you have a selection that you prefer over FSU.

I know that when my s decided on fsu, he felt relieved that the process was over and is now just very excited. There is much to be said for making a decision and having the college application process behind you so you can enjoy the balance of your senior year in high school and focus on keeping your grades up during this final stretch.

I wish you well, but it sounds to me like you should put your energy and time into your first choice school.

I believe you're right. UF is my first choice, but I applied late and won't hear back until April 1st, and all of the freshman class spots are probably taken up already. I just want to have a back-up safety in-state in case I don't get into UF and decide to stay in Florida

melissa, I am afraid that you will not be accepted to FSU without meeting the minimum SAT/ACT requirements. Unfair as it may be, my understanding is that an acceptance hinges on meeting minimum requirements, and that with the cut back in acceptances, that your math score will hold you back from a successful appeal. The CARE program is also full, with a waiting list. I recall that you were accepted to UCF? Reading the UF board, I think that is a reach also. I think UCF may be your instate safety for now.

melissa, from your previous posts, it was my understanding that you really wanted to get into FSU as your top choice. I'm not sure of what changed between then and now. Like others have said, I would advice you to focus on your current #1 choice. If you’re not that interested in FSU anymore, it would say to just let it go. Your chances at UF are probably slim, but you never know. Good luck with everything.

sunnyflorida - That's what's been keeping me from making any further advances toward being accepted since I didn't meet the cut-off by 10 points, I don't believe I'd be given any slack. That sparked the reason for this thread, I didn't want to put all of my efforts into attempting to gain admission and then just get rejected like I knew I would be. UF pretty much seals the deal on whether I stay in-state or not, so if I don't make it there I don't think I'll attend UCF.

FSU MBA - UF was always my first choice, but since I applied late I thought my chances were completely out of the window. I spoke with a counselor who told me I still had a good shot of getting in if I had increased my SAT scores, which I did, but now I fear that all of the slots have been filled. At the point of that realization, I started to take a serious look at FSU and it became one of my top choices. The thing that changed is that once I got deferred I realized that I would never get accepted since I missed the cut-off by 10 points. Thank you for the good luck wishes :)
