Logged onto my UCF and saw this message: "Your application has undergone an initial review and is currently deferred for further evaluation with the Admissions Committee. A decision may be delayed as we assess the strength of this year's applicant pool."

Can anyone explain what that means? I noticed that unlike other deferred notifications they never really gave me anything specific that I should improve, (GPA, test scores) instead it's just "A decision may be delayed as we assess the strength of this year's applicant pool.". Is that good or bad? And how long may I have to wait for a final decision under those circumstances?

I'm also unsure as to what to improve. My stats are the following:
GPA: 2.8UW/4.0W
SATs: 670V/500M/520W. 1170/1600, 1690/2400
OOS Fall 2010 Term

My mid-term grades were excellent and should have helped to raise my GPA, I won't know by how much until early next week when they hand out updated class ranks & GPAs.

I also think I could do much better on the SAT as the scores above were from my first time taking it.

For those who have gone through this deferred process with UCF or others, what would you recommend to improve my chances? Should I call UCF and ask for myself? UCF was always kind of my top choice and I knew it wasn't going to be a cake walk getting in so any advice would be EXTREMELY helpful!!

Also another thing I've been HEAVILY considering (and something I've probably should of done in the beginning) is switching from applying for the fall term to applying for the summer term. If I'm correct Florida schools require all students to take at least 1 summer term, right? If so, would it be smart to request to change terms?

Hey! That’s really weird, because you have a good gpa and pretty good test scores. What’d you get on the ACT?
I’m thinking you could have gotten deferred because: 1) You applied a little on the late side, and maybe they’re getting close to accepting the max. number of students or 2) You’re OOS. I’ve heard that they tend to hold those students to higher standards.
If this is your top choice, I would either call or email UCF and express your concern. A letter of recommendation or two wouldn’t hurt, either. :)

I’m pretty sure that Florida schools do require all students to take at least one summer term before they graduate. It would definetly be smarter to get that over with this summer, especially since you’ll be familiar with the campus before the other thousands of freshmen start too. And a lot of the time if you’re deferred, they make you come take school that summer anyway or you’re denied.

I do think it’s because of your GPA (unweighted). But if you want to play it safe, try changing it to summer term. And yes, I asked an admission representative from UNF (another university in Florida), and they did say something about how all students in Florida are required a few summer credits or something like that… I’m not too sure because it was quite a while ago. I’m attending this summer! You might want to get it all resolved or change terms asap to apply for housing, if you do plan to live in a dorm! I heard that they run out of space really quick!

To hsm: I only took the SAT as I didn’t think the ACT would make much difference, would it make my application stronger to have scores from both tests? And yea I did apply kind of late (late November-early December) which I shouldn’t have, but oh well.

And thanks mizz, hopefully my unweighted GPA is higher when I get my mid-term report back. Also, when does the summer term begin for UCF? Hopefully it doesn’t cut too close to my graduation date! haha, but yea I think I’m going to go ahead and try to actually talk to an admissions counselor. If worse comes to worse I guess I’ll just have to sacrifice my summer, hopefully UCF will be worth it!!

Oh and one more question, by what month does UCF usually run out of housing, specifically the freshman housing?

Summer term begins on June 28th. But I suspect that you’d have to be in Orlando a couple days before for orientation to sign up for classes and all. I never thought about attending summer term until I came on this forum, and many have said that they or their son/daughter had a great experience starting over the summer. It’s also a good idea for OSS students, since you can adjust to the campus and Orlando better before fall term begins. I don’t think there’s a specific date for when UCF run out of housing, but just know that there aren’t enough dorms to accommodate everyone. So I would put a deposit on dorms as soon as possible.

Btw, I also suggest taking the ACT. I know a lot of people that does better on it. You need to speed up the process and try to do everything right now. If you plan on calling an admission representative, then do it Tuesday, and if you plan on taking the ACT, go sign up for it RIGHT NOW. You really want to take care of this so you can start on the FAFSA and deal with all that financial stuff.

Like Mizzxvii said, I would probably take the ACT to show them how concerned you are. I don’t think it’s required, but it can’t hurt.
I know that UCF has a ton of housing available, so I’m not exactly sure when they’re going to run out. But a lot of the people applying to UCF are also applying to UF (they find out if they’re accepted February 12th) and FSU (they already found out, but some applied late/got deferred and have to wait until March 17th), so after those dates, I think most people will have already signed up for housing and it would be harder to get a good priority number. Also, remember that people who do register for housing aren’t necessarily going to go there, so you’re priority number will probably drop then too. Like I put in for housing already, but I’m also waiting to hear back from FSU and UF so I may not even go there. ANYWAY! lol Good luck again!

Thanks for all the advice so far guys :). I got my updated GPA today and it’s officially 2.91UW and 4.08 UW. Literally RIGHT on the verge of a 3.0 :(. Should I send them the updated transcript? I figure I should send them any good news regardless of how small, I also had close to all As this past semester and aced all of my exams so I figure it wouldn’t hurt to show them I’m working hard to get in.

JD- Have your gc send your midyear grades to UCF. I bet that when they see that you did well first semester your status will be changed to accepted. If you really want UCF, it also wouldn’t hurt to email admissions with a short note acknowleging the deferral, letting them know that you are sending your midyear grades to bolster your application and that UCF is your first choice and should you be admitted, you would attend.

As a side note to all: In the past, more UCF spots opened up after the University of Florida bloodbath (I mean admissions decision’s notification date) in mid February.

Theres still plenty of time to apply, a friend of mine applied in march and got accepted in april last year but i still would apply ASAP. Depending how you stack up Canes I would apply before because more students will apply after or UF hopefuls who already have applied to UCF will accept admission to UCF. This will close up spots. There isnt much left to do at this point that would dramatically change your chances so just apply and send everything in, i’m sure youre gonna be just fine! But the more you wait, the less likely youll get in unless you have impressive numbers.
