Okay, so I was deferred from Georgetown, and my chances at RD are not looking too good (the deferral letter said 10% would get in).

What should I do now? I'll speak with my college advisor tomorrow to work out how to get into G'Town, since it's still my top-choice, but what I need help with from you guys is where to apply else.

I was drawn to Georgetown because of it's academic reputation, location near a city, and the sense of internationalism and citizenship that define the campus. I'm looking for a school of "similar" (loose definition) academic stature, a good college town, and that has an ENGAGED student body.

Please do NOT suggest Harvard, Yale, etc. as that will be no help. I was just deferred from Georgetown, and see no need in applying to schools that are guaranteed "no's"

My stats are competitve for Georgetown, though clearly just not quite perfect.

2180 SAT (710 M, 740 CR, 730 W)
34 ACT
Top 10% of graduating class, competitve public school.

VP of Class Government
4 years of Cross Country
3 years of swimming.
Work experience
Plenty of volunteer hours.

Solid Recs and Essays.

Any advice would be appreciated... deadlines are approaching!

I wouldn’t want you to regret later in college not applying to those top schools that you mentioned. You never know what happens. Your scores are competitive. Maybe for your extracurricular activities, you could show or explain to the colleges your passion about them.

As for colleges, don’t give up on Georgetown. Other colleges that you may look into are, as vab22 mentioned, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Emory, Amherst, BC, UChicago, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, etc…

Also, do work hard on those essays. They really make a huge difference.

Thanks for the help you guys. Any other suggestions would be appreciated… I already have my Wake Forest, Williams, BC, and Dartmouth apps ready. A few instate backups (Maryland, St. Mary’s)

These suggestions are great, and I’ll definitely take them into consideration… for now I’m just bummed, but I’ll get over it

Dont worry. I was deferred then waitlisted…at the MSB. But immediately after they let me in and as soon as I got in I transferred into SFS and am probably looking at a 3.7 first semester gpa.
I had a little better SATs, 3 sport captain, top 1% of graduating class. Joking essay, 10 minute long interview, generic recommendations.
If I was Georgetown I would accept you.
I got into BC CSOM honors, UVA honors, William and Mary honors, U Richmond, and NYU Stern. I got rejected from Management and Technology program at Wharton and Program in Liberal Medicine at Brown.
Apply everywhere you can afford to! I really regret not applying to UPenn (not Wharton), Dartmouth, and Princeton, but Im quite happy here

Have you considered Notre Dame and Rice? I noticed you said you have your Williams app ready, you likely will have a good shot, but if you’re interested in LACs you might consider applying to others in the top 25, for example Haverford, Carleton, etc…

I was also deferred from Georgetown this year, so I really know how you feel. I think you still have a shot there as well, so don’t be discouraged. Good luck!
