AZWolves6, your dad was laid off from the University of Michigan?

No, he worked at a company who did work for the University, and was stationed at the university for about a year, essentially working for the hospital. Then went back to his old office the first day and was laid off.

I see. Do you like Michigan State?

No, but I got into my safety school Indiana, which I do like.

Which is the good one, Michigan or Michigan State?

MICHIGAN.
State is nice and not a bad school, but is not on the same level as UMICH.

So it's like U of Penn and Penn State? Both great state schools, but the U having the edge.

A2Wolves6, congrats on getting into Indiana. A friend of mine went there and said it was the best 4 years of his life.

Is there U of Indiana and Indiana State? Which is the better?

Wolves...What school did you apply to--LS&A? Admissions said that 15,000 applied to LS&A last year, 3000 were accepted. With the renovation of MoJo, they're admitting even less this year for lack of dorm space. My son is also waiting to hear--similar stats to yours--in-state, both parents alums, non-ranking high school, etc. We all knew it was going to be a stretch, but you have to give it a shot. I do feel badly for your generation. U of M admissions has become ridiculously competitive compared to when my husband and I applied. Our high school stats were no stronger than yours and, yet, we somehow managed to graduate in four years. My husband even got his M.B.A. from there immediately following undergrad.--no work experience required beforehand. Anyway, my son also was accepted to IU-Bloomington and was offered a $4000 faculty award. Have you been down there for a visit yet? If not, do it soon--it will lift your spirits! It's a beautiful campus and Bloomington has an Ann Arbor feel to it. The campus and the town looked like a great place to spend four years.

A few of my friends go to Indiana, and they all love it. I've visited a few times, and the campus is awesome.

LSA accepts more than 3000 people...I think you must mean that LSA enrolls 3000 every year.

According to Michigan's website, for Fall 2005, 23,882 applied and 13,601 were admitted. The #'s aren't broken down by college (LSA, etc.), but that percentage is probably roughly the same for LSA.

The 15,000 applied/3,000 accepted breakdown was what an LSA admissions officer told me during a phone conversation last month. Perhaps she needs to brush up on her facts? Or, maybe she was trying to scare us off--one less app. in that gigantic stack of theirs.

No, that would be bad form. I mean, if she was going to cite numbers she should cite the right ones, even if she did have some hidden agenda! If she meant 15,000 applied to LSA then she must have been leaving off internationals. The admitted figure is about 3 times what she quoted. Enrollment is LSA each fall is something over 3000. Not sure what she was quoting.

I was kidding about scaring us off. We've encountered other inconsistencies with their UG admissions so being given inaccurate info. wouldn't surprise me.

Mensa is here to yank chains. Obviously Penn and Penn St are not both state schools, etc.

Maybe the people who are best with people aren't so good with numbers, LOL. That's why I left admissions, actually--I just wasn't a people person, and recruiting wasn't playing to my strengths. I wanted to be someone in the back room crunching numbers and putting out helpful analyses.

GoBlueAlumMom - I applied to Kinesiology, Sport Management. Your son has good taste in schools, LOL, same stats, same schools, same situations. I got a faculty award too of 6,000. I know I need to go down there, nothing but positive talks about people's visits there, their time there, and the education they received there.

Hey Wolves--No kidding...Sport Management? Guess what school/program son applied to? Same! Too weird. Maybe you-guys should meet sometime. We don't live far from Ann Arbor. BTW, what type of EC's do you have? Lots of athletics? Well, I guess my son will be receiving his deferral any day now...LOL! Even though I'm a Wolverine, you both have been admitted to a great safety that even has a similar Sport Management program to UM's. It's all good!
