I applied to NC state knowing that its my safety school...especially because on Naviance (a website through our school that allows you to be compared on a graph for any school with your stats and shows you how many ppl got accepted or not) i was a clear candidate for the school.

however i got DEFERRED? and i am FREAKING OUT! because my gpa and test scores are higher than the average accepted from my school and i'm really really worried that if i get deferred from my safeties that i should be applying to easier schoools!!?

Perhaps your guidance counselor could check in with the school and get an idea why you were deferred.
Sometimes it could be that they didn’t get all of your documents or they made a simple mistake, so stay calm.

A bunch of my daughter’s classmates got in early (Feb or early March) to a school that was one of her safeties but my daughter didn’t hear until the regular April date. That freaked her out but she ended up getting in there and almost every other school. So don’t assume the worst!

Is NC state a school that requires an essay explaining why you want to go there? If so, was it generic or well tailored to the school, showing that you know specifics about there programs and why it’s a good fit? Some schools really care about their yield and don’t want to accept students that they think won’t attend
.

It’s not unheard of for schools to deny students that are way over their average scores simply because they want to keep up the appearance of a “low” acceptance rate, and therefore have to deny some kids. Did you show any interest in the school (interviews, visits, etc)?

I hate to say this but your ACT is just above median and your grades are the bottom 30% for NCS. By deferring they are letting YOU define how this comes out. Do well and you may get in.

But the operative word is “may”. Not sure how you came to regard a school where your ACT is outside the top quartile for that school and your GPA is far outside the top quartile for that school as a safety . . .

@PurpleTitan there is a school website called Naviance that lets you compare yourself to all students who have ever applied to any university you are interested in and it shows their stats. I was above average and quite frankly nc state is considered to be one of the easiest schools to get I to at my high school. That’s why my career center lady said it was because I did not demonstrate any interest in the school…never visited or took a tour etc.

But it is my safety and that’s why I’m confident I’m gonna get accepted in March.

My son was deferred from one of his EA schools, his test scores are above 75th percentile for them. We were shocked and then laughed, because he got into his ED school which is more competitive and has higher test scores.

@longhorndreamer Your career counselor made a good point. Your lack of demonstrated interest might have caused you to be deferred. Below are a couple of articles that you may be interested in. And I highly recommend that you “demonstrate interest” for all the colleges that are still pending, just in case…

Add another safety then. In any case, it’s better to have two safeties, so that, if you have to use your Plan B, you still have a choice in the Spring.
Do demonstrate interest at ALL the colleges on your list.
Note that being “above average” does not make a school a safety, merely a match - a safety is where you’re roughly in the top 25% students (or higher).

If I recall correctly, Naviance is specific to a high school- the data points you are looking at are from all applicants from your school. This would vary greatly from “all students who have ever applied”. For that info you would need to look at current common data sets.

It’s also possible that Naviance is showing the last 5 years or more of data and NC State got a lot more competitive in that time. I have no idea if that’s true, but it could be.

Go visit if you can, if you can’t, call, write an email, let them know you want to go there if they accept you in spring.
