Deferred- What's that mean?

Hi, I just checked the website, and it says, Decision: 'Deferred. Manual Review Required.'

What does that mean?

I applied early... does that mean I'm out? or do I have to wait?

Illinois is my top choice...

Please please reply... I really feel like vomiting.. because I did not expect this.

Deferred means that you are not really rejected, and not really accepted either, just in between. I've heard kids last year that were deferred, some got in, and some didn't. I'm sorry to hear about your deferral, but you still may get in. They will let you know at a later date.

Regards,

It means you are not an automatic admit based on class rank and test scores and that the department will review your whole file to determine admission and you may not hear anything until after all applications are in so they can compare you to the entire applicant pool. This happens to a large number of applicants (and the engineering school tends to do it more than others) and many of those are eventually admitted.

Yoyoma, out of curiousity, what were your stats?

Don't worry, pretty much everyone I know had that for a while. I had it for about 3 days until I was an admit. Some had it for weeks.

Just curious where are you from and why is Illinois your top choice?

I had 3.9 GPA with 7 APs... but 1180 SAT I score.

And good essays/ I sent two recs just in case/ good e.c. including governor's school/boys state/ interns/ clubs/ sports.

yoyoma, Are you an in-stater or an out-of-stater, and what College did you apply to in the University?

"Deferred: Manual Review Required" for U of I doesn't mean the same as if you were deferred from another university, like in omniscient's reply. For U of I, deferred means that they have all of your application materials submitted online or sent in by your school, and they are looking at them right now (they are manually reviewing them). You'll receive an admissions decision soon. Mine said Deferred too, and about 2 weeks later it said "Admit" and I got an acceptance packet in the mail.

I'm outstate, and my major is architecture.

Yoyoma,

My daughter was accepted into Architecture at UIUC. Her SAT score was a bit higher but not by much and the rest of the stats and ec's are similar. She has friends with lower gpa's and test scores who were accepted into Architecture.

Good luck. I hear the program is fabulous! If you are still deferred, it may be smart to call or make a visit.
