So I was deferred with a very high SAT (1530) and a middling GPA (3.2 UW, 3.9 W). Not a lot of ECs but the ones I had were interesting – a couple of national awards for filmmaking, study abroad, independent study of an unusual language, etc.
I’m pretty sure the GPA got me deferred, but I wondering if there’s any chance at all? I’m OOS and very interested in a specific program at UMN.
Forgot to mention … also AP Schoar with Honors and a 4s and 5s on APs.
What college(s) at UMN were you deferred from? What were your first and 2nd choices? What program are you interested in?
They seem to be deferring everyone with a questionable GPA. Hopefully your senior grades are very strong. Send in first semester/trimester grades, express continued interest and hopefully you’ll get in.
Three years ago, my D was accepted with a 3.4 uw and a 33 ACT so comparable to your stats. But she was in-state. Things are more competitive since then, especially for OOS’ers.
Good luck to you!
Thank you! First semester grades are definitely an improvement, so I am hopeful!
what is the best way to contact admission regarding deferred status? My d is going to have her first semester grades sent in but always wants to call to express that UMN is her first choice and that she is on track to receive her IB diploma. Is email best or call? How can you find out who her admissions officer is? Thanks
If you are local, hand over the sealed official transcripts to admission office so that they can put in her file. I did the same with my D and the tracker was updated the following day. Mail can take upto 2 weeks.
@HopingMN this link might help you, although when my D17 used it once the information was outdated (this was for a MN rep). So just be aware that it might not be the most current: https://r.umn.edu/umr-admissions/undergraduate-admissions/contact-admissions/find-your-admissions-representative
Calling them is also a great idea - the person answering the phone should be able to transfer you to someone for your region or the correct person to discuss sending updated info. Finally, sending an e-mail should work as well.
Good luck to her!
