Deferred

My friend was deferred from UM and she really wants to go there, and I really want to help her.

Do any of you know what the best way of getting accepted is? Especially since UM is rolling, could they potentially take her off the waiting list in a week? or in April? She's going to work hard to get her grades up, but would extra recommendations or retaking standardized tests help her?

What kind of letter did she get saying that she was deferred? I'm wondering because my boyfriend got a letter 2 weeks ago telling him to retake his ACT, and then they would look at his application again.

in her letter, they mentioned that they'd notify her before april and that her counselor should send in her first semester grades, so she assumes that it'll all hinge on her grades. i hope you bf gets in and i hope my friend does too!

what were their stats, if you dont mind posting them?

This is really a "glass half full" situation. They could have rejected her outright. It's definitely the case that students are accepted after deferral - so she should focus on her grades, maybe take the SATs and/or ACTs again, and apply to other schools that she's excited about too.

On the same line of thought, a friend of mine still hasn't applied (instate). He has about a 3.0, 24 ACT. Commitment in ECs, yadda yadda yadda. Does he have any shot at all?

He has a shot, but from what little you posted, his stats are lower than the average. If he had applied earlier (September/October) his chances would've been much better.

I just found out yesterday that she had applied to the School of Kinesiology instead of LSA. Is it harder to get into Kinesiology than LSA? If so, I would probably suggest to her to try to apply LSA to at least get in.

I heard that UM took 0 people off their waiting list from last year :-( it's really sad...

netshark, those stats are very low for michigan - so i'd say chances are slim unless your friend is a recruited athlete or super talented something or other. To be honest, i think michigan state's average gpa is higher than a 3.0.
