Deferred

For those of you deferred (or those who'd like to help those of us who are), what are you going to do/send in?

I'm planning on sending a letter talking about my study-abroad in France (which will hopefully be finalized soon), get good first semester grades, do an overnight visit, and possibly get another recommendation. Do you think this will help me?

Does anyone else have any ideas/what are you doing to increase your chances?

I got deferred as well. Any hints would be helpful.

I've a feeling i've been deferred, so any help here will be gladly appreciated.

I haven't heard yet, but I have a feeling I'll be deferred (or rejected, just because no one here has yet). Does anyone know what percentage of deferred students are later accepted to UChicago?

yeah, smae here, no news yet but i have a feeling ill be deferred

Doing well in courses this term, contacting them email and telephone, sending other material (such as something more one has written, new honors, etc.), and another recommendation all may help. It is important to show them that Chicago is one's likely #1 choice as well.

In addition to idad's suggestions, enlist your GC's help. The GC's note with mid term grades may be useful. If Chicago is still your top choice, GC needs to know this.

Take as an objective look at your application as you can. What could the problem have been?

If your grades were weak, your midyears will be important. Study hard!

Essays could have been better? Send a supplemental writing sample that is the best thing you have ever written!

Didn't convey to Chicago how much you like them? Interview or visit if possible. And if you already have, wax eloquent about the department or departments that intrigue you.

Something else ... analyze, put yourself in the shoe of an adrep, read 'how we evaluate' on the UChicago website again. You are all smart kids. Think.

And have a plan B! Make sure your overall application stragetgy is safe, and that if Chicago doesn't work out, you will be somewhere else good. My son's plan B match schools included Case and Brandeis. Other students applied to U of Rochester. Smith and Bryn Mawr are excellent choices.

Best of luck to all of you. This is a very stressful time of year, but spring will bring happiness.

I was deferred.

I emailed my UofC admissions counselor about my interest and about scheduling an overnight.

I also plan on sending a great rec from my English teacher, A copy of an article from the Daily Herald where one of my poems was published, and just a list of a few of my accomplishments this year since I applied: Illinois State Scholar, large role in the school play, and all that fun stuff.

Andy

You are doing all the right things. Good luck.

That's good to here.

I would love to go to U of C more than any other school, but I think everyone here needs to realize that if you try you are going to have fun and get a quality education no matter where you go.

i got deferred today and i'm worried about the midyear report. i have had a very rough senior year and am in jeopardy of failing calculus. i haven't been slacking at all though... i'm assuming this will basically nullify any chance i have?

I just got deferred today too so yeahh, ugh but life goes on.

I know what you're talking about though alin. I'm a volunteer Firefighter, and due to increased time i've had to spend fulfilling my duties, my grades have gone down from all A's and A-s last year, to an A and 2 B+'s so far this year. Lets see what happens, stop stressing out so much and get working, trust me it helps. The more stress you add on yourself by thinking about this stuff, the worse you'll feel.

SO GO GET GLAD!!!

My friend was deferred and made it in later in the year. Talking about it with the member of the admissions committee who interviewed me, it all came down to the repeated e-mails, phone calls, and mailings that he made to the school. A genuine display of interest in the face of a waitlisting will go a long, long way towards getting you off the deferral list.

alin88,
it certainly won't help. If there is a personal factor that is causing the problem, your GC needs to know about it so that it may help mitigate your midyears report.

Can you arrange for a tutor in calc? Can you meet with your teacher/GC to see if you can work out some plan? A failing grade is something to be avoided if at all possible, since it effects your other applications as well. It is possible that you may want to involve your folks in this before it hits a critical point.

hey guys, im really sorry about your being deferred. i also got deferred, but i think uchicago knew i was using it as a safety school..i really wanted to get into rice, where i applied ed and got accepted! so, best of luck to those whose first choice is uchicago!! also, interest is GOOD!!, as in my case! haha.

GOOD LUCK!!

Lets hope you get into your 'reach' schools then. UChicago as a safety, i think thats absolutely insane...

i got into rice!! which is where i wanted to go ne way.

Congrats on your acceptance at Rice, Apollo. Stats, please ...

hey dress and dance:

i'm submitting these two essays that a professor helped me get into a literary review on dostoyevsky's work (brothers karamazov and the idiot), an art history analysis between donatello's david and michelangelo's david, another piano CD from a recent performance at rice univ, and a rec from my piano teacher/(art history teacher or latin teacher-possibly).

plus, my mid year report will be pretty solid: 5/7 grades above 94.

i'm submitting it all tomorrow, except for the recs(obviously) in addition to a paper i'm writing right now about how chicago has and will remain my number one choice, and about the aspects of uchic that i truly love..and my fit for the school.

man, i really want to go there...so i'm doing it all.

indiandude -
be sure you cite the review if you are not including the actual article.
Give your letter at least a couple of days to sit ... then proof it with fresh eyes. You are very much emotionally involved right now (as you should be), but to be an effective editor you need some distance.
