Deferred

oh, i'm just going to cite the review, definitely. also, good idea on the waiting for a few days: i just wanted to try and get it there before the staff leaves for break. at least then before the RD candidates are reviewed, they will know they have a deferred EA candidate who really wants to be in and who is a 100% matriculant.

Chicago will be more impressed by the content than the postmark date. Give it your very best shot, and don't skimp the editting passes.

ohiomom-
here are my stats as you wished..i hope you dont mind that i left out some stuff and just copied and pasted:

GPA (weighted): 102.75

Miscellaneous:

i had a really really original essay. everyone who read it said it was amazing..my writing is unique, etc. I submitted a summer art history essay i wrote for stanford university's art history class, the prof said the paper i wrote was grad work...i also sent in a copy of me playing with the austin orchestra playing a concerto for a piano competition i won.

well....it's ok cuz my first choice was rice, and i got in ed. uchicago obviously saw that i wanted to go to rice more than there, and i didnt seem very passionate about uchicago...i dont like cold weather. lol.

Thanks, Apollo - the stats compilation is really very useful for RD applicants doing their final evaluation - as well as juniors + parents thinking ahead. It is entirely possible that your lack of enthusiam was noted, because you do have a tremendous profile. In addition, this EA round seems to be rougher than the last.

Rice is a great school - I hope you will be able to continue with your music while you are there!

thanks! and good luck to your son/daughter!

ohio_mom, i fully understand what you are saying. if possible, could I PM my extra letter of desire/intent to attend chicago to you to read tonight? and come back to the editing table on thursday?

thanks for everything.

so when you email your GC, are you supposed to tell him or her about your accomplishments or ask him or her questions

thatindiandude-when i called the admissions office today, they told me that the way early action deferrals work is that first they look at the regular applicant pool and then they look at the early action deferral pool separately and compare them to the regular applicants. but they first have to look at the regulars first. also, they don't begin looking at deferrals until the end of january so it doesn't help sending it off before break. Also, the committee informed me that while the students are on break, they are not because i am flying out to chicago for an interview during the first week of january.
good luck to you though, i'm sure you'll do fine in april!

thanks a bunch, boop. so i should just wait and send it along with my midyear report?

yes, is that when your midyear report is available?

Clifford Stern: While we're waiting for a cab I'll give you your lesson for today. Don't listen to what your teachers tell ya, you know. Don't pay attention. Just, just see what they look like and that's how you'll know what life is really gonna be like.

Woody Allen films make me happy :)

thatindiandude: A personal letter, email, or phone call (often more than one) can make a difference. You may want to check out some of those who were deferred, but ultimately were accepted RD from last years RD results thread.

how do i go back to archived posts?

By Kparikh87 (Kparikh87) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 10:11 pm: Edit

I just talked to my admission counselor at Chicago. Apparently she knows me since she visited my school for past 2 yrs. She told me the acceptance rate for the deferred is usually 30-40%, which is much higher than the other schools'. However, this year the accpted numbers for EA were lower. So there is an increased competition amongst deferred themselves. Personally, she said I have a good chance if I raise my GPA slightly and maybe have one or two more recs.

from the '03-'04 school year: admissions calendar. i.e. when we were sophomores. that is very refreshing information.

thatindiandude-did you find out what exactly was the accepted number for EA?

thatindiandude: Last Spring's official results:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=43404&highlight=official

This is the story I most remember:

Decision: Deferred, Waitlisted, Accepted!

Stats:
SAT: 1560 (800V/760M)
SAT IIs: Writing, 800; Literature, 740; Biology M, 720.
GPA: 2.7u/3.2w
Rank: Unranked
Other stats: 34 ACT composite.

Subjective:
Essays: The best pieces of writing I've ever produced.
Teacher Recs: Incredible. One teacher told me, "I've never compared anyone to Jesus before, but I came damned close in this letter." Another is locally renowned for her letters. Another said she wrote "a damned good letter," which must be great, coming from her. The head of school wrote one too, and she loves me.
Counselor Rec: Fair, I guess. He doesn't know much about me.
Hook (if any): Conversations with a few Chicago alums.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Connecticut, USA.
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Major strength/weakness: My essays and recommendations / grades, respectively.

Why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I pushed really hard for this. (More below.)

Other Factors:
I did pretty much everything I could to get in here. After I got the waitlist letter, I e-mailed Jenny Connell at least once a week updating her on what I'd been doing; I mailed essays and certificates and such once in a while; I had teachers send additional letters and got letters from new teachers; I asked everyone I could about finding a Chicago alum who would talk to me. (I ended up speaking with three different Chicago grads who contacted Ted O'Neill for me.) I showed the University that I wanted to be there before anywhere else, and it worked; I couldn't have been more excited when Ms. Connell called.

wow. idad. thanks for that post.

so that doesn't count as peskiness. nice. :)

aghh what time do you go to sleep people

I got deferred too..... :(
My plans are:
1. Send my SAT II scores that I got yesterday
Math 1 - 760, Math 2 - 790, Chem - 780

Mail em and convey my love for the college

Send an additional reco

Send updates of scores and other EC's etc.

Anything else I should do??
I really want to get admitted!!!!!!!!!
