I got deferred as well....
GPA: 100.033, Rank: 22/240
SAT: 1880 :(
SAT II: US History: 760 World History: 680 Math I: 590 lol
APUSH: 5
Play the bagpipes, lots of community service (started own service organization), Officer of many clubs, highly involved

I can guess that my test scores and rank were what kept me out. I did get accepted to TCNJ ED, so good luck to everyone who got deferred!

While I actually think that all of you that really want to attend Chicago have a good shot of reversing the deferral, I wouldn't be a proper mom if I didn't put out a word of caution and tell you to re-evaluate your RD list and make sure that your overall admissions strategy is safe. After all, you can apply to UChicago as a transfer as long as you are safely in college somewhere good. On the parents forum, someone mentioned that you have to be wildly optomistic and paranoic at the same time!

Some other match schools that would keep intellectual kids happy: Reed, Brandeis, Case, U of Rochester, Vaser, Grinnell, Smith, Bryn Mawr.

I think ohio_mom offers some good advice. One may also want to add some "reachier" schools as well. S had friends rejected from Chicago and accepted at Ivies and Duke for example.

is swarthmore a more holistic evaluating school, like chicago? because i know that amherst is pretty elitist..they're all about the secondary record and if you get a few Bs you're screwed-->according to the interview by NPR with some current amherst adcoms

i think..depending on the quality of what is sent in. it's not just that we show interest..it's that we show interest and provide MORE quality examples and distinguish ourselves from both the deferred EA and the RD applicant.

"if all the "deferees" pretty much send all the same things (emails, letters, samples), how is that going to set us apart?"

Not everyone will make the effort - just like not everyone joins waitlists. If you look at the results list here, you will notice that it is reduced by 2 already - an ED to Dartmouth and and ED to Rice. Also, not everyone is all that hot on Chicago, and some will just give up.

im not giving up...
got some strong SAT II scores just 2 dAYS AGO... and also am gonna send two recos, one from my Phy./Chem teach and my 10th grade principal

umm... sounds ike im jumping the gun..
but can deferred people get scholarships on merit? (for summat they may have done?)
And need-based aid is independant of all of this right?
