Just found out I got differed from Michigan (number one dream college since I was three watching football games with my dad). Any advice on what to do other than wallow in self pity?

I applied with a 3.9/4.3 gpa, 31 act, and I'm class president with a bunch of leadership, volunteering and extracurriculars. I know I'm not the best candidate, but I really did think I would get in. My whole life, I've been working and studying, so I could someday be a wolverine. I can't help but feel like I failed. Is there any hope I could get in after regular decision applicants are processed?

Not only do you have hope, but a high probability of getting in. UMich is being very ambitious with its admissions this year, and will be deferring a lot of people, many of which, including possibly you, will end up being accepted.

i got deferred too, even though i had a gut feeling i would make it. i made it so clear in my essays that i really wanted to go to michigan, and my stats weren’t too bad. i’ve heard that it’s pretty hard to get admitted if you’re deferred. but life is just bull_**** what can i say.

My son got deferred today, too for engineering. 4.1 & 2100 SAT. Great letters of rec, stellar ECS, serious work experience & strong essays. He received what has been said to be a good deferral letter. More work to do over the break for this school.

Thanks entenduintransit! That makes me feel a bit better. And you made me laugh faiintx! I didn’t think that was possible since I’ve been crying since I didn’t get in, so thanks! Haha.

Exlawyer: Is there a difference between a good and bad deferral letter? I thought it was just a generic email to everybody. Your son seems to have great credentials, so maybe deferrals are really common this year or something.

FaithLoveHope: Apparently there are three types of defferal letters. Not exactly sure what that means. I was deferred from Engineering also. 3.85UW/4.48W GPA, 31 ACT, 2070 SAT, pretty good EC’s with leadership as well. Ahhh I’m really sad right now :’(

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID ++++++++ is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

Because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Deferred as well. Engineering: it’s like it’s a theme starting here. Obviously this year is an exception to any other year, but does anyone have a ballpark idea of what the acceptance rate will be for the deferred group?

I also got deferred from the college of engineering. I received the same email as “jyeah25” does anyone know if this is the “good” email and what the “good” email even means? haha I really want to go here and I’ve been a pretty good student so far in high school (31 ACT, 4.28 weighted gpa, 4 ap classes and the rest were honors). Also I am a varsity athlete in 3 sports and am captain as well. Do you think I will get in?

I have no idea, but I was also deferred. Out of state engineering applicant, 2260 SAT 3.73 UW (top 3 CT public school), great personal statement. 5 on BC Calc as a junior, award for best in class. I get the feeling they’re only gonna accept their favorite applicants that they know are coming straight from EA.

My son got the exact same deferral letter as the one above when he applied last year with similar stats to many of you (32 ACT, 3.9 UW GPA). He is now a freshman at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. So hang in there everyone, deferral doesn’t necessarily mean no, it quite often means not quite yet. I well remember how difficult the wait was though, so I know it isn’t easy.

@Jesse5810 do you remember how long your son had to wait before he got accepted? The email said early-April but I’ve read a few posts that said they got their decisions only a week or two after being deferred.

I haven’t heard yet but I’m pretty sure I got deferred. Can you guys see your decision on wolverine access? I still don’t have the View Decision option.

My son received the same letter for Engineering. Stats: SAT 2140, ACT 35, 800 SAT II Math, 770 SAT II US History, 790 SAT II Physics, 4.6 W GPA, #11/450, Worked as a lifeguard year round, Varsity Football Player, etc.
