I applied intending for business and got deferred
I know several students from my high school with lower sat/grades who got in. Any ideas why I didnt get in?
White Female from NY
2040 SAT, 700 CR 670 Math
95 weighted 93 unweighted gpa
rank 87 of 734 at competitive high school
TONS of extra circulars with community service and leadership positions consistently over all 4 years, job and law internship this year
good recs and essay
all honors/college level classes, 2 aps and full schedule no free periods
is it a lack of sports or something?
Shocked by this I thought I had a good shot at itā¦

Wow ā¦ Iām shocked. I was looking through some decisions, and there are some that I honestly did not think would get deferred (e.g. the OP with a 3.9 and a 31) ā¦ Times ARE getting more competitive, but it also sounds that Michigan admissions was just a bit aggressive with EA, so some of you donāt need to worry. People do get admitted off of the deferred list.

There is no such thing as good vs bad letters. Kids were admitted from all 3 last year.

crapā¦i think i got the bad email.

Dear Chelsey:

We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this yearās freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQās about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID XXXXX is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

What if I didnāt EVEN get an email today? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I got the same thing chels. I really hope that doesnāt mean weāre screwedā¦ :/

I just think that the admissions office is super busy with all the decisions, so I wouldnāt worry phoenix. Iām sure youāll know tomorrow, but it stinks having to wait with all the decision drama flying around on here!

I got deferred with a 4.31 GPA and a 33 ACT. Needless to say, Iām pretty crushed.

Got the same letter as chelssā¦I really hope we still have a chanceā¦anything else we could do to increase our chances besides sending in grades? mich was my #1ā¦ :(

30 ACT 4.1 GPA Weighted- hoped to debate at Mich ( on the recruit list) senior class prez, elected model congress prez, 8 gavels, mock trial lead attorney 2 years ( only freshmen to be asked to be on team in 8 years)award for service and academics local paper, policy debate awards, 2 sport varsity athlete, founder debate club, half marathons, homecoming queen, lead in fall play and spring musical, started non profit for serve food banksā¦no study halls, APS and honors courses.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Just at a loss.

I think that all of us who got the deferrals are looking at it as practically a rejection, but I think that Michigan is just trying out a new system this year. Maybe too many people complained about it being unfair that so many people got in EA, so not enough spots were left for Regular Decision. Based on the grades and whatnot of everyone on this thread, I actually feel a bit better, since so many qualified people got the deferral. It shows that Michigan is not saying weāre not in, just that weāre not in yet. Praying for all of us! <3

Hi All - The good letter is the one mentioned above and signed by Theodore L. Spencer, Assoc Vice Provost. Apparently, there are 3 types of deferral letters and this is the one to have from what I can see on earlier CC posts. My son was a little upset that he got deferred since his stats were much higher than students from his school that are currently in engineering. Sounds like many stellar candidates for engineering got deferred this year. Did anyone call the school to find out why they were deferred? I have seen on CC that people did this in prior years.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Stay tough and focus on finals. Good things come to those that wait. With the stats listed here, I think many of you will get in to several fanstastic school including Michigan! Good luck everyone.

Wow - looking over these posts I canāt imagine you kids didnāt get in EA. Not quite sure what is going on. According to our school scattergram, you are all way above the average admit rate. Crazy!!

Joining the club - deferred with a 3.9w (4.05 junior year 4.25 senior year), 33 ACT, 7 APs, pretty good ECsā¦ blech

Same here. Deferred with a 4.2w gpa, 34 ACT, tons of extra currics (involved in every extracurricular orchestra every year), honors/ap classes every year, and good letters of rec.

I got deferred with a 3.74 UW GPA, 34 ACT, all honors and AP classes for four years at a competitive high school, two club presidencies, and a few awards (all minor except for National Merit). One of my recommendations was really good (the teacherās recommendation of me for a scholarship was glorious), but the other mustāve been slanderous to get me deferred. Well, either that or they adcoms didnāt notice the obvious artistic genius my essays displayed. :

After seeing all of these ostensibly well-qualified applicants whoāve been deferred, though, I really canāt be sure. Maybe application rates have skyrocketed this year. 'Sokay, though; I didnāt want to major in apples anyway.

This event was enough to remind me how fortunate I am for having gotten into UIUC.

What should we do now? (Call them? Should I send them extra curriculars Iāve taken on this year? Are we required to send first semester grades? Anyway I can improve chances?)

I saw in an email to my college advisor at school saying more kids than EVER were going to be deferred but it did not mean we would not get in. Also, that students last year that may have been admitted may this year be deferredā¦ I am very disheartened by this because it is 1/2 of my EA schools and my top choice!!!

deferred with a 4.4 unweighted and 35 ACTā¦ really makes me feel like im screwed for all the ivys i applied to! just got deferred from MIT as well

*weighted my bad. you can tell im a scholar
