Are the decisions for deferred applicants going to come out as a rolling admission process or will they be released only in April 2013?

Last year one poster insisted over and over there was a good, a bad and a worse deferral letter. It turns out she is now at MSU. and had no idea what she was talking about. As someone else mentioned in this thread, last year people got in no matter which deferral letter they received. It may have been sent according to school within the University, but in any event it didn’t make any difference. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to determine if your letter is good or bad. It doesn’t matter.

jyeah: I heard decisions could be coming out any time from now until April. I’ve heard rumors about people getting their decisions a couple weeks after being deferred, but many were released in February in previous years.

As far as what to do now, I think it would be best to send in our 2nd semester grades then just wait it out. The deferral emails said that admissions has all the info they really need, they just want more time to look it over. Unless circumstances have changed drastically in this past few months, I wouldn’t send in extra information that would be unnecessary at this point. I still might call in just to see what the deal is with all of the deferrals and whatnot. I highly doubt I would get a helpful answer though. haha. Thanks for the words of encouragement exlawyer! :)

FaithLoveHope: thank you for creating this thread. Your words of encouragement, along with those of others, really made me feel better:) I hope all of us who can’t imagine not going to UM receive our decisions soon!

If you get deferred is there still a chance to get in a preferred admission/pre-admit program?

MichLover: I really hope so, but there is no way of knowing…I read that some heard back as soon as two weeks after being deferred while others closer to April=/

Where did you hear that?

How good do seventh semester grades have to be to be good enough to send in?

I was going through so many posts about this subject (from 2009 I think) and they mentioned that.

It makes no sense that Michigan accepted students that were less qualified than those they deferred. But they did.

The downside for Michigan is that some students who were interested in Michigan and who had stellar stats will assume Michigan is not interested in them. Many of those students are just going to move on.

I’m glad we can all talk about the deferral process on this thread too learningisliving! A couple people on CC said they’ve heard of people receiving decisions really quickly after deferral, but they aren’t entirely sure it was accurate. I’m hoping it is! I think if you keep up grades this semester, so they can tell you are still trying and didn’t just give up senior year, you’ll be okay. If the grades reflect the grades you’ve gotten throughout high school or are better, it will be a good advantage if you send in your seventh semester grades. :)

Same stats for my son: 33 ACT, 4.3 Weighted gpa. I think the unweighted seems to be counting more from what I can see on the acceptance list. He had a 3.56. Total crap shoot

I got deferred with a 1920 SAT…should i retake them? I am applying to LSA OOS ¶ with a 3.6 with 4 APs and lots of ECs.

I got deferred too and received the alleged “good letter”

31 act
1990 sat
4.8 weighted
3.75 unweighted
President of an honor society
Vp of another club
Lots of ec’s and service hours

I’m freaking out because this has been my dream school since I was 3 :(

I got deferred. It was and still is my dream school but we will see. I’m staying positive.
2030 SAT
3.8 weighted
3.6 unweighted (I don’t think weighted matters at all)
President of 2 Unique clubs, and an editor for the school newspaper
Worked 1 job during the school year, and a different one over the summer

deferred w/“select group” letter
31 act/3.64 or so unweighted
quality schedule, president of quiz bowl, co-captain of improv team, secretary of nhs, theatre for 4 years, great essays/recs

my semester grades are looking pretty solid with 4 ap’s so hopefully that’ll work out for me

also, a friend of mine with a 3.9 with an excellent schedule/29/good ec’s and everything got the first letter while my friend with a 3.4/30 got the “bad” letter

do i think there’s some credibility to this? seems possible
also, checking the past threads, people with the “good” letter seem to be getting in more

HM

How many APs is the average to have all four years combined? I have 8, including the 4 I’m in now, but my school is highly competitive…just wondering

i got deferred with a 2150 SAT, 4.2w gpa, 5 APs (school only lets you take them starting junior year), 2 really good letter of recs, dancer of 9 years, 3-4 leadership roles in school, double legacy.
i’m pretty upset. i knew my gpa would kill me (uw isn’t that great) but when i visited mich they emphasized that they do have a holistic process. i’m OOS.

Based, it’s been essentially proven that the letter type means nothing.
