Deferred

Hi! So I wanted to start a new thread with some questions. First does anyone know anything about the statistics of getting in after being deferred? Second how exactly does the deferral process work? One of my friends explained it as almost a wait list. And lastly is there anything I can do to help with acceptance in march? I am almost certain to attend if I get in, like a 97% chance. I'm OOS if that helps at all!

I’m with you. I was deferred and I’m really upset. I’m in-state
Here are my stats:

ACT-30
English-34
Math-31
Reading-30
Science-26
GPA (UW): 3.67
SAT-1980

I have really good essays and really good extracurriculars and I don’t know why this happened. Is there any chance for me to get in RD?

Don’t be deterred. Deferred basically means they want to compare you to their entire applicant pool. In summary, you were good enough for the college, but they had so many amazing applicants they didn’t want to downright admit you until regular decision (hopefully).OP you also have to remember that being deferred at UNC as an OSS is downright awesome since OOS at UNC CH is Ivy League competitiveness.
Being deferred is LOT better than being waitlisted. Deferred have the same chance as everyone else in the second round. However, waitlisted people only get in if they don’t have enough students matriculate.
I can’t chance you, but I can say without a doubt that deferment will not adversely affect your decision. For the second poster, do you come from a competitive high school or something? At my high school (it’s a really small town), we had people who were accepted with much lower stats. I’m pretty confident that as an IS student you’ll get in the second go around though. I’d send in an extra rec just in case though
The smartest guy at my school was so mad when he got deferred at Yale that he gave up on it, despite his counselor’s and friends insistence. Don’t be like him. You still have a chance, or they would have just flat out denied or wait listed you.

well I think the problem may be that I am from Chapel Hill. I guess it’s really competitive for my county or something. But no, I go to a special school in NC for the arts–you have to audition to get in. Most of the kids at my school got in, even though I am much more qualified than them. I really am freaking out, because I thought I sort of had UNC in the bag and now I’m not sure what to do.

Countrybumpkin, thank you! My first semester senior grades were the best they’ve been in a while (a 92 the rest 96 and up) so my GPA for first semester is something like a 5.3 weighted (I’m in all IB classes). I don’t know if it is worth testing again or if it would matter if I did (33 comp. 34 math 36 reading 33 English 28 science if I’m remembering correctly). I also got a job in the beginning of December and I work about 20 hours a week so I don’t know if that matters at all. All my friends are pretty excited about my deferral and I’m glad it wasn’t a rejection but it would just be nice to know! If anyone has any tips please post them or message me! I don’t really know.

Yeah, that’s the thing too. I got straight A’s my first semester this year, which raised my gpa from like a 3.62 to a 3.66. I also took that ACT in december, so I’m not sure that they saw it when they looked at my app.

Here is a link to Q/A from UNC about last year’s deferred statistics. [UNC Admissions Blog: FAQs for Deferred Students](UNC Admissions Blog: FAQs for Deferred Students)

There’s more detail but the bottom line is that they deferred about 1800 and about 300 were ultimately admitted so chances are about 17%. They say about half of deferred were IS vs OOS, but don’t give any data about relative chances of ultimate admission between the two groups. Good luck everyone!

I was deferred too. The wait is killing me but hopefully it will be worth it! Good luck to us all!

Essays- good, one very personal essay acting as a hook
Recs- Teacher recs were excellent, didn’t read guidance counselor’s
My only other hook was a letter from a graduate/donor submitted to the chair of the chem department

Instate
SAT 2140
GPA 3.5/4.44 weighted
Good EC & essays
Only 5 APs (3 senior year must hurt)
5.4 weighted GPA at mid year
Very discouraged - must be missing something

Nchomer, I wouldn’t worry too much. it’s pretty obvious that the only reason they would have deferred you is because of your GPA. It’s not terribly low, but it’s slightly below UNC standards. That 5.4 weighted GPA mid -year will surely get you in, since the rest of your stuff is great. Also, I’d send in an extra rec just in case.

Good essays and recs; 2 were from alumni

Bumpkin

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I will absolutely send in another rec, and check with the school counselor about any other steps.

While I am hoping for the best, I also understand the reality of the numbers related to deferrals. It is not an easy route.

holy moly you kids deserved to get in. I had a WEIGHTED GPA of 3.88 and got in somehow. is that a fluke?

If Countrybumpkin is out there I just wanted to say thanks - you were right - I got in. Your encouragement from early this year really helped.
