<p>I presume you applied ED or EA. Deferred means that they made no decision right away and that your application is being "deferred" to the regular decision pool. Not the worst thing that could happen, you still have achance.</p>

<p>Even a waitlist does not mean "almost impossible". True, some schools don't admit any or only few students on their waitlist, but others admit like 2/3 of their waitlist candidates. The same holds true for ED. Also consider that some schools defer almost everyone who was not admitted ED (instead of rejecting them right away), whereas other schools only defer candidates who still stand a chance in the RD pool.</p>
