I was deferred on November, 28 and I am wondering if anyone has any insight that could help me out. I have a GPA around 3.3-3.4 and an SAT of 1030. I have other assets in my application: A rigorous schedule(many AP classes, and two years in IB), many extracurriculars, and a triple legacy. With that said I know why I got deferred, in fact I expected it I just want to know if anyone has any knowledge on how I can improve my chances of getting in, how often people who are deferred get in?, or any other words of wisdom someone is willing to offer.

I don't mean to sound nosy, and you don't have to say, but why do you believe you were deferred?

Jake, were both Math and CR over 500? If one was and one wasn't, you will have to take the SAT again, as they unfortunately will not accept you with either under 500. It is their bare minimum. So maybe retake? Or take the ACT instead?

I posted on another thread about how to build your application. Here is a link. Scroll down for my comments.

My D had a 490 on Math, retook with no prep and just by "winging it" and did worse. Then, after a visit to FSU and a pep talk with an admissions counselor about how she did not meet criteria, she did some prep and got her score up to 530 or 540--I am forgetting which. She had a total of 1100 and got in.

I will tell you she did NOT want to take that @#$#$ test again, but after a visit to a lower tier Florida U, she decided it was worth the effort. She really gritted it out and did it.

If I were to guess it would be from my GPA and SAT scores. Neither of which were great, although they still seemed to be within the realm of staying competitive. I also had a couple "D's" in IB classes sophomore year, although I thought that an upward grade trend last year and the fact that my bad grades came while I was in IB would be taken into consideration.

They were CM 500 and CR 530, I also met the minimum level criteria for ACT. Although I do plan on retaking both tests. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

hopefully you took the sat today. Good Luck! An improved score will certainly give you a much better chance.

Getting deferred is like a second chance. Obviously the admissions department sees something they like in your application profile. Follow the suggestions that sunnyflorida had in her post (they are all great tips).

I think one of the most important things you can do at this point to help yourself out (other than increase your SAT and get good grades in your high school classes) is to call fsu admissions on monday. Ask to speak with an admissions rep about your application. Ask a few questions, but most importantly get the persons name. then follow up with via email periodically to that person with additonal questions and or updated information about yourself. the email naming convention that fsu seems to have is the persons first name initial foloowed by their last name followed by @admin.fsu.edu

so if the person you speak with is named john smith, the email address would be jsmith@admin.fsu.edu

I think having a personal contact on the inside can really make a big difference.

good luck.

s'nyfl & nycd have both given you excellent advice. So I ditto everything they've said. I encourage you to retake the ACT & SAT. Maybe even get a tutor to prep for them. You want to be as prepared and confidant as possible when taking those tests because it will help ease any test anxiety.

Good luck! We're pulling for you!

Just got off phone with FSU admissions. I was deferred Nov. 28. The admission officer was very helpful and pleasant. She got right to point and said I need to get minimum ACT scores of 21 on writing (have 20) and 22 on reading (have 20), or minimum 500 SAT critical reading. If I do that, she all but guaranteed in blood I'm in. They are holding my file to see test scores. They liked my high GPA. I have no negatives and several positives checked on my file per admission officer.

She recommended trying to take ACT as standby this Sat-Dec. 8, for a Feb decision.

Last tests they will use are Jan 26 SAT and ACT Feb 9 for 2008 class. If taking tests in Jan and Feb- no FSU decision until later Spring-not Feb. though.

Good luck on the retakes Lizard. We're pulling for you!

Great news!! On the ACT site you can download one entire sample test, and nice supporting info in the same download with tips--like its ok to guess on the ACT-no penalty for wrong answers. Less tricks on the ACT, questions and answers seem to be more straight forward.
You can do it! Do a little review, an go stand by on Saturday and take the test.

Lizard, what was your wtd GPA? Sorry if it was on another thread. Good luck on Saturday's ACT. My D is taking it too

Good luck!

FSU tends to look favorably on high grades in solid courses rather than just on one test.

Sounds like a really good conversation you had with admissions today. Good luck on the ACT. I look forward to seeing you get admitted!

Good luck!

Best wishes Lizard -- sounds like you are very close and should be able to pull the scores up a notch. With your sincere desire you deserve to be admitted for sure.

I am in the same boat with Lizard.
BUT
ACT writing -26
Math - 25
Reading - 20...
Do you think they will reject be because of two points on the reading ACT....
I also did well on the math sat but didn't do well on the reading portion of the sat (480) Clearly I have a problem with reading...
any comments?

I think your reading score is holding you down.FSU requires a minimum score of a 19 on it.you just made the cut.

really? because I thought it was a 22

collegegirly, FSU have minimums which have to be met, and in this year of 30,000 applications.... I doubt they are giving any slack. esp since they post the minimums. And if you call, they will gladly go over what you need to do to meet minimum requirements. If you are below their minimum requirements and did not retake the ACT or SAT, I am not certain your decision will change. See number 8 post above on the minimums.
When you are deferred, they send you a letter and provide you a link with the minimums required; I cannot find the FSU page on deferrals just now, but they do consider a minimum a minimum.

Edited to add: here is the link with the minimums. fsu admissions | requirements | u.s. freshman

COLLEGEGIRLY
FSU has a special program called CARE for students that need some extra help.

Didn't you say you were first in the family to attend college?
You might want to look into this program as a way to get admitted to FSU.

The minimum is a 22...
and the C.A.R.E Program deadline has passed...
Should I even bother thinking that I am getting in?
