I think they usually take around 1 in 5 or so kids for RD from deferred applicants. I do know that they will not look at the deferred applications fully again, only the notes previously made by the EA adcom. This seems more of a negative to me. Don't give up hope though, there is still a chance!

Lol, I don't think I've ever seen someone take their gpa out 4 decimal places. But it seems to me that Notre Dame does not defer many applicants because they choose to only defer those with a good chance of getting in later. Your best bet is to get great grades this year and perhaps write them a letter expressing your interest. Good luck!

i thought they deferred most... why would they outright reject someone that has any chance of getting in at all? or at least getting waitlisted... if you get rejected EA it had to be that they were completely certain you would not get in RD or even get waitlisted RD... that's what i always thought at least...

yeah lol my GPA is what it said on my transcript and i have strait As so far this year with 5 APs and i am planning on writing a letter expressing my desires to attend their university... just want to get in... what do you guys think my flaw was on my app?

interesting. my grades are considerably worse than yours (then again, i go to a school that graduates nearly 100% to four year colleges, 35% to Ivies, and 43% national merit scholars), but i got in early. i have many of teh same ECAs as you do (not an eagle scout though, i do have a 4yr NROTC scholarship), but i would say that the biggest difference between us is SATs.
specifically reading

consider taking a bunch of practice tests and taking them again?? it can't hurt....
thats my advice as a hs senior (for what it's worth...)

How was your essay? Believe it or not, I think the essay says a lot to admissions! Perhaps consider another short essay before RD that might offer more insight into who you are, and what you might bring to ND as a student (a particular passion?). Certainly include any grades (hopefully positive) as well as any awards that might come up and maybe even another teacher or counselor rec. Perhaps your college counselor at your school could be in touch with the regional rep for your area. Don't give up! Deferred does not mean Rejected!

Did you write a "Rudy" essay, you know the type of letter that glorifies Notre Dame and basically says your obsessed? Because they absolutely hate that (my Dad used to work in admissions, way back when)! Your essay should mostly just talk about you, not them--if you can help it. It will help if you write a gracious letter saying that you respect their decision (even though you may not) and reaffirm that you are still interested (again, without looking obsessed). You have good stats so you definately have alot going in your favor.

And I would not recommend calling because if they say that you are missing something (besides test scores or a higher GPA), it might not be smart to all of a sudden add that to your resume. E.G., if you did not have alot of community service (even though you do) and they tell you that and when they go to reread your application and see you suddenly have a whole lot of community service, they will catch on and notice that you are only doing it for admissions purposes.

I would still have your counselor call, and you should call frequently. I developed a pretty good relationship with my regional rep, and my counselor was also back and forth with her (he was an awesome guy). I definitely think this was one of the large factors that got me off the wait list.

I was deferred and then wait listed! I know how it feels to get a letter and continue to wait! It was almost a year from the time I started my app to the time I got in! It's horrible, but it's worth it! I'll never forget that moment--I was at the library studying for AP exams, when I got a phone call from my regional rep (left me her cell to call!). I ran to the bathroom to call her back and nearly fainted in there! There's always a chance--do not get discouraged--I almost gave up once wait listed but "Irish" e-mailed me and told me to keep calling and to stay interested and now I'm writing this message from my dorm!

write another letter saying ND's your first choice (if they are) and you are still interested. Like I said, think of random reasons to call your regional rep (is there anything I can do after being deferred? Are pretty much all the EA acceptances coming to ND? How many more spots are you expecting to fill during RD?). They write down your name every time you call, and they do keep track of it!

joe.tedder, your resume looks quite a bit like mine. Maybe my essay and SATs were better, but your ECs look better than mine. I applied RD and got in.

How much does ND emphasize class rank... because this is my weakest area. I am ranked 27/135 with a 3.9 GPA. But my weighted is 4.4, which i am sure is top 10%, however, my school will not send weighted GPA rankings.

my essay was not a "Rudy" essay at all. i talked about myself and that was it, i didn't glorify notre dame or w/e...hmmmmmm.......... just wanted to get in..... i am going to write a letter to them... im from CT so yeah... not alot of people from my school are getting in many good schools yet... im starting to think that my school has a bad reputation... idk what to do

any advice will be very helpful... do you guys think i was qualified to apply EA to notre dame? i thought i was but maybe i should've waited....

Did you ask your rep before you applied EA? If not, you may try and e-mail him/her yourself and ask what you can add, if anything, to your application. My guess is it's your rank and the Reading SAT.

I have called admissions offices in the past but it is usually after my students have been rejected. I don't think your counselor should call them yet. I think a very low key e-mail to your rep, from you, asking what you can add, would yield the best result. The reps at ND really work for you. I spent a lot of time at our meeting talking about the entire process with our rep and it was very interesting.

My bad...thought it said 20%!! Your rank is great. To me, ND seems very focused on test scores. I remember last year if you had no hook, it appeared you needed a minimum of a 33 on the ACT for EA. I haven't really looked this year.

A few words of encouragement here: as someone mentioned, deferred is not rejected. You really are an excellent candidate and it may be that you will shine in RD.
