Deferred

Realistically, what are the chances of getting in after being deferred from priority decision. Since many people were accepted for Spring semester it seems pretty unlikey that a deferral will get in at all. Any thoughts or prior experience with this please!!

Personally, and have NO previous experience, only what is going on in the level of schools that kids that apply to Maryland have on their radar, I think Maryland dropped the ball on this one.
With the removal of ED, your going to get a trickle down, better apply all over the place group of kids, I would venture to guess the apps to Maryland were way over because of the removal of ED at other schools. If you read the accepted thread, a 1/3 or more said "well if I don't get in anywhere else I might go", so anything is possible if that helps ease your mind a bit.

My daughter 95 GPA, 9 APS 31 ACT, 3 years INTEL research semi finalist. Research in lab which gave her a phenominal rec, didn't even get deferred to the regular pool, flat out rejection. She laughed with anger of their suggestion to attend a two year community college get her GPA up and reapply as a transfer student, I tell you, I am disgusted with the whole process. NOTHING is worth this (sorry to hijack your thread) but the kids move on as best they can. Best of Luck!

CBK, thats shocking, are you talking about University of Maryland and did she get admission into spring?

Yea College Park, did priority deadline, nope, no spring admission, nada, flat out rejected.

They told her to consider a local community college to get a solid GPA and seriously consider a transfer. She cried and laughed and threw the letter accross the room.

ARE THEY ON CRACK?
when I THINK of all the work this kid put into her research project, no joke during the summer about 25-30 hours a week, about 10-15 for the past 3 years READING writing to professors/researchers all over the world, for it to come to a 2 year community college to bring up her GPA? Nothing wrong with that option, but this kid has a bug for research, she loves it, but makes me wonder if it is nothing but a sick game of what they do to these kids. Unfair.

yea oos is hard to get into UMD

is there any way to contest the decision? i really wanted to go to umd, it was my first choice. i know someone who got in from my school (oos) with a low gpa and a 1650 sat score, also not a minority, i dont understand how this happens. =(

Although my son does not have the gpa of your daughter his SATs were 1520/1600 and was deferred. DOes this mean that he will not get in - it looks like other's stats are much lower.

Does anyone think that it's strange that there are very qualified candidates getting rejected/deferred and they are all from NY??? Mind you, I am just an observer (my d did not apply to UMD), but just wanted to add that.......Is it just possible that soooo many NY kids applied that they had to create a cut-off somewhere? (There was discussion about this a few months ago with UMich-EA and NJ-after a certain point, everyone was deferred, regardless of stats)

FWIW we're in Maryland and know some great kids with respectable stats who were rejected this year.

CBK, I am so sorry for your daughter. I am in shock myself over that!! Good luck to you and your daughter.
