I was deferred for the Summer Admissions I assume its because of my poor gpa (sat 1250, act 26). Anyone in the same situation?

Were you deferred for fall and offered summer? Or deferred for summer? How are your grades looking for this semester? Send them as soon as you have them. It could make a difference.

D was deferred too. We expected it, her SAT/ACT scores are not high for an out-of-state student. They will give her until the Feburary 7, 2009 testing date to submit better scores. They also want to see her mid-year grades.

She's not too concerned, she was equally thrilled when accepted to another school in North Carolina (with a killer football team) that she can start in the Fall. She applied to FSU for Summer.

Wow I'm sorry to hear that.

I got a 1060 on my SAT and a 26 on my ACT. GPA was just below 4.0 weighted. Got in though!

Deferred until after music audition in Feb.

I talked to an admissions officer today and she confirmed it was my grades. She just told me to send my midyear grades as soon as possible. Fortunately my school is on block scheduling. But one concern is mine is the F i have in Spanish 2. I decided to take this class online but i am still enrolled in the class. But when the class ends in December it will be instantly audited and replaced with an A but the F will still show on the transcript. But the new grade will be on it right below it. Do you think this will be a concern for them?

Well, I am afraid that it will be a concern. If you are repeating a class, they do see both grades. You will just have to submit your transcript after your block semester is done and see what happens. How are your other grades? Have any honors or AP A's that will be seen as well?

I have a friend who got a 1460 SAT (m+r), with a 3.4 (uw), 3.9(w) GPA with good ecs. She was deferred. Now that, I don't understand.

There must have been a few problem grades. I can tell you a single D is even taken seriously, maybe even more so with high test scores. They don't just want students with potential. They want students who live up to their potential or surpass it. I think they are trying to separate the students who "can" do it from the ones who are "getting it done", and especially the ones who are stretching themselves and still getting it done. And FSU's gpa is not your average weighed GPA. It is only core courses. And they look for students who are taking the hardest schedules. They put alot of importance on AP's classes if offered, taking classes instead of off blocks.....

^ I think you're completely right, sunnyflorida. I got in with an 1820 SAT and a 3.9 UW, so my SAT was not all that high. But I think I got in because I have taken tons of dual-enrollment classes with all but A's except for a couple, and I have a lot of leadership EC's.

^I agree with this, seems also to be the pattern at UF.

Oops.. I meant to say all A's except for a couple. Haha

according to the admission officer he said that as long as i can make sure they can show that it was audited they wont mind. My grades for my block Semester would be an A in American History regular (D in American History AP last year) half a credit from Spanish 1 (took online in seperate semesters) which was a B. B in Algebra 2 honors, The class that will be audited im just sitting in the class which is a F. Online I have an A and I will be done with the class at the end of my block semester.

Hi,I just found this website while searching for info about my daughter's deferral to FSU until she retakes the ACT and SAT. We knew that she didn't do real well on the standardized tests but figured that her grades thus far would speak loud enough. Her deferral arrived this morning and she was devastated. UF is really her top choice and now she knows that there is no chance. She has a 3.73 with quite a few classes from our local community college. She's been on swim and dance teams for all four years. But her ACT score is 26 and her SAT is 1170. (she's taken them several times). I believe that FSU is willing to "split" ACT scores which gives her a 28 in Math. She suffers with reading/writing. FSU accepted lots of kids from her high school last year who had not done nearly as well as she has. She's devastated. She's been accepted to South Florida and Alabama into their Engineering programs already but UF is her top choice (February is when they send out their acceptance/non emails) and FSU is her second choice. I'm guessing that we should get her enrolled in one of the prep classes. Do you all think that the online classes for SAT/ACT prep are good or is a classroom setting more effective. Her schedule is crazy and online would work better for her. Any advice on the best online classes? There seem to be so many to choose from. And, I'd like to avoid spending too, too much right now. She's interning at a local chemical company in their lab. Oh, she's full-time dual enrollment at the community college now and was crying this morning because she has a B in Calculus. Does anyone know if admissions offices look at this B more favorably considering that she's at a local college? Thanks. I'm so upset for her. We've been telling her that FSU would be a definite but UF was where the big question regarding admission was. Any thoughts would help. She's going into Chemical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering (hopes to go on to earn her Master's after four years). Thanks and has anyone else been deferred from FSU this morning?

first of all, welcome to the fsu board. also congrats on south florida and alabama. bioth are outstanding universities and if it ends up that your daughter has to choose between them, she has two really good choices.

re: fsu, i have a few suggestions. first of all, i think you need to have your daughter establish contact with an admissions rep at fsu. you have several great questions about grades and this could be a good reason for your dayghter to call. once she speaks with someone (our son found the admissions department to exceptional, friendly and willing to help), she can get the persons email and maintain periodic contact with them. updating them on grades, awards, test scores etc.

it really helps to have contact with somone who can "look out" for the derred application. it also shows fsu that she really wants to go. with so many applicants (and i understand her first choice is UF), FSU is more likely to accept students that they sense have taken the initiative to contact them and express a desire to turn the deferral into a admission.

Have you visited FSU? if not, i would recommend doing so asap and setting up a meeting with an admissions rep. I think this helps also.

finally, my last suggestion is if your daughter applied for the Fall 2009 semester and was deffered to see if she can switch to the summer 2009 session. our son applied for summer, went and loved it.

UF is a great school and I hope your d is able to gain admission. FSU is also really terrific. With a little bit of focused tutoring, I think your daughter could raise her scores a bit. FSU and most likely UF will want to atleast see her try. the prrp courses are good, but in my opinion while more expensive, private tutors can be more effective.

anyway. good luck, congrats on the two admissions so far and keep plugging away.

I've been reading theses boards for a while now, but just signed up. I applied to FSU oos from NJ. Unfortunatley, I was rejected. It's definitely one of the worst feelings I've felt.
I feel the reason I was rejected was due to my low test scores SAT:1560 total and ACT: 21 composite.
nycollegedad: is there a possibility to turn a rejection into an admission? Can I reapply? I applied for Summer 2009.

Honestly I don't know what to do, FSU is really where I want to go.

TryingLion - I hate to discourage you but a rejection is not very hopeful.
If you really have your heart set on FSU, you could try attending Tallahassee Community College and transferring to FSU once you obtain your Associates Degree.

cybermom- I take no offense. I completely understand what you're saying, but I don't want to go down that route. Not that it's a bad thing, but I've worked much too hard just to settle for cc
