Deferred

Anyone know what the deferred percentage is this year? Is it higher than the denied percentage?
What should I do to get accepted? My 1st semester grades are really bad and I plan to take the sats come january. What should I do?

SAT1: 2100 (M-790 CR-620 W-690) Superscored
SAT2: Math2 - 790 Physics - 620
ACT: Did not take

GPA (UW/W) - 3.5 / 3.9
EC - tons. lazy to list em all here. varsity soccer (4 years, captain). cello (13years)
Service - founder of service club etc tons

Im really sad now. I really really wanted to get in

Also, does anyone know if the regular pool generally have lower stats than the early pools’? (I’m an international by the way)

There’s not much else to do. I was deferred and I know it’s disappointing, but the only thing to do is retake tests and hope that your first semester grades bump up your GPA and class rank. Email your counselor and ask what the weakest part of your application was…based on what I see here, it was probably your SAT scores. (I also got a 2100) Try taking the ACT in February and see how you do. I think you and I both are going to have to do a lot of studying for the CR on the SAT though! I also got a 620 and I think that’s too low for them.

hanihani: from what I hear, EA does have statistics that are a little higher. Also, remember that EA has fewer spots to compete for which makes it more competitive. I would say that you have a pretty good chance of getting accepted under RD. BTW, are you interested in engineering, math or science because your SAT math and SATII for math and physics is amazing.

I don’t think your test scores are the weakest. I got in with an ACT score that is lower (not much lower though) than what ND usually accepts. I’d worry more about your GPA. Also, your ECs don’t seem strong since you’re stating yo have “a lot”. Having “a lot” shows you’re scattered and not focused.

Ok, please do not get deferred with denials confused. Just because you are deferred doesn’t mean that your class rank and gpa aren’t good enough. It just means that ND doesn’t know where you will fall into the rest of the applicant group - you may be a very strong candidate when every other application comes in. The admissions process of EA is very, very, very competitive, much more so than the regular decision.

csmith27 - thats a problem right now. senioritis really hit me hard and my first semester grades will not help me. but i will definitely take the sat 1 again in january to boost the score up. lets study more and boost that cr score. good luck to both you and i! a friend of mine at my school got in with an sat of less than 2200… so i hope i reach her score or higher!

chrissmith332 - i really do hope RD stats are lower because i looked at EA stats and they are really high. way higher than what i expected. i’m interested in business. thats why i wanted applied to mendoza actually. haha my physics score is actually kinda bad…

sayyeah - i guess you could say that i am scattered since i did sports, music, and art altogether. but then again, i did these activities constantly and did most of them for all four years at high school.

hawkswim09 - i hope its true that the “adm process of EA is very, very, very competitive, much more so than the RD”

Well, from what I have heard, the EA process is very conservative which makes it ultra-competitive to get in. Best of luck!

sayyeah - i’m just posting this so that ppl can give me more suggestions as to where i can improve

SPORTS
Soccer (4 years varsity. junior and senior year cocaptain. participated in competitions between schools within our region and got 2 bronze medals)
Track and field (1 year varsity. i wrote this on the additional comments section of the commonapp)

MUSIC
Cello (13 years. section leader at school orchestra since junior year. elected as school representative since sophomore year. i am in the honors orchestra at my school. participated in solo concerts, chamber concerts, church orchestra, school orchestra, musicals, plays)
Tri-M (senior year) - our school only allows seniors to apply to Tri-M
Has work experience with the cello. received payments. (Musicals and plays)

ART
Art varsity member since freshman year (4 years)

SERVICE
Give and Take (GT) Club - founder and copresident since freshman year (4 years).
Habitat for Humanity - since freshman year
Amnesty International - since freshman year

OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
Youth Group at Church - all four years and finally president now… i need to tell ND that I am now the president. I wasnt then when i was applying in october so i didnt include this in my app… but now i am :)

this is all i can think of now. sorry if this isnt “a lot”. also, our school has a weird policy which limits us to only 2 leadership positions. so, being the captain of the tennis squad and the president of my GT club basically was all i could do.

good luck everyone!
I was deferred as well, I have an SAT score of 2200 (if superscored), but i would say that my gpa is my weak spot. Let’s hope that EA really is more competitive.
This is the 2nd school to defer me… -_-

I also have internships i did during the summer. and i worked at my dads office since 8th grade… i also get money for this.

o, and im going to send them my AP Calc AB score. Btw, i got a 3 for my IB Biology Standard exam… its out of 7. should i still send it?
Also, i forgot to add in my app that i tutored children at school during my freshman and sophomore year and then tutored privately during my junior and senior year… i totally forgot to add this in my commonapp… if i send this now with my additional credentials, will they be suspicious of me? coz its true, its just that i completely forgot.

hawkswim09 - thanks. btw, are u a student at ND?

meroko731… northwestern denied me and gtown deferred me as well… i was really depressed the whole week…
im glad villanova accepted me though…
good luck… (lets trade our sat scores jkjk)

hanihani, I got accepted to Villanova EA too. I didn’t know if it would hurt me since I live near there but I’m happy. How much do you think geographical representation affects ND? Are you applying or trying to get a Pres. Scholarship to 'NOVA?

I got accepted EA to ND but I was going Arts and Science, not Mendoza. I assume that potential major has some sort of weight.

That’s so stupid that your school only lets you take 2 positions. I guess their just trying to “spread the wealth”.

Not to insult you, but I didn’t see your 620 in Physics the first time around. All your math is really high though!!

chrissmith - i live outside the us so i actually dont know much about the geo representation. sorry, but i do think they actually want some diversity. so perhaps being intl or being other than caucasian may help. I’m not sure about the scholarship in Nova… i dont know if i have a chance and i really wanna get accepted into ND… if ND accepts me, then no offense but i wouldnt really do anything with nova except let it go.
Do you think since I applied to Mendoza, one of their best schools, it had some effect and that made them defer me? Like if i applied to a lower rated college, i would have had a higher chance of being accepted? Youre really lucky though you got accepted… i’m so jealous!!
Actually, during our freshman and soph years, were only allowed 1 position… so its even worse… i wanna tell ND about this since its not like im not trying out for positions but its more like i cant. because the school doesnt let me.
Haha… yea… 620 isnt that great… im just not strong in the science sections :frowning: you can see… i got a 3 on the ib sl bio exam… i knew i sucked but not that bad :frowning: eek

Should I tell them about our position policy? I think i might sound kinda cheesy? idk… it sounds kinda bad… should I still send them some sort of note though?

I got deferred…do a higher percentage of applicants get accepted via regular action than early action? I think I got deferred because my ACT score is a 30

Last year, EA applicants had about a three times better chance, percentage wise (approx. 53%) of being accepted vs. RD (approx. 17%).

I think Notre Dame has one of the higher EA acceptance rates compared to RD acceptances

Excepts of an online article below. 13.5% increase in EA.

Early applicant pool larger, of higher quality
By Liz O’Donnell

News Writer

SOFIA ITURBE I Observer Graphic

Notre Dame’s Assistant Provost of Admissions Dan Saracino said this year’s early applicant pool increased both in number and overall quality, as measured by GPA and test scores.

He said the admissions office received 4,330 applications for the Early Action deadline, which is up 13.5 percent from last year’s number.

“Good news for us as well was the fact that we saw an increase in the quality of the overall applicant pool as measured by transcripts and test scores,” he said.

With the Regular Decision deadline set for December 31, Saracino said he anticipates the increase in applications will continue.

“We will probably see the increase carry over. I would anticipate that we’ll have close to 15,000 applicants when the dust settles mid-January, which would be a 6 percent increase overall from last year.”

hanihani, DEFINITELY TELL THEM. If they know that your school has that kind of policy, they will probably take it into consideration.

One other note: I believe that for the first year at ND you take a lot of core courses that aren’t particular to any one school. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you pick your actual school after freshman year. However, admissions almost definitely considers your potential major or school when making an admissions decision, and I would assume that a mendoza major is harder than an arts and letters. Other than that, I don’t know much more than you about how they actually decide.
