deferring a year from waitlist?

So like thousands of other students, Harvard is my top choice. I have 2400 SATs, a 3.7 GPA, very good extracurriculars, double legacy, my aunt is a professor at the medical school, and my alumni interview was fantastic. I desperately want to go there and I was wondering if anyone knows if Harvard offers deferred acceptance from the wait list or anything like that? I have a friend who applied to Cornell for 2009-2010, but was offered a place as a sophomore in 2010-2011. Would Harvard do anything like this?

Google for Harvard z-list. It’s their way of sneaking in kids they don’t want in the upcoming year but aren’t prepared to reject.

yes this happened to my friend’s brother last year. he was deferred a year and will be in the class of 2014. he was also a legacy if that helps.

the deferred entry offer is usually made to legacies. this is called the z-list and consists of 20-50 people. instead of giving you an offer from the waitlist to the currect class they offer you one to the upcoming class.

hey, that actual happened to me… I’m not legacy, but like you i had good sat and act, 4.0 GPA, came out of an excellent private school, sports and arts extra curriculars, etc., but my family has almost no money, and i would require almost a full scholarship to attend any private college. harvard wasnt even my first choice - princeton and stanford both turned me down outright. i was waitlisted at harvard, and my interviewer actually called me in may and said she was really pushing for me with admissions. then in like, JULY, I got a call from the GA Harvard Rep and she said, “well, i have good news and bad news”. i did choose to accept this offer, to wait a year and attend harvard in 2014. i dont know about it being called the “z-list”, but Harvard offers this to 80 students every year, and usually about 50 accept. I’ve met 40 some-odd people on facebook who are doing the same as me. most people spend the year abroad, but i’ve spent it working! anyways, best of luck. hope this helps.
