Deferring A Year...?

I was lucky enough to be accepted to Harvard class of 09', but have also been offered an opportunity to live and work overseas for 8 months. Harvard's acceptance letter encouraged taking a year off to pursue other interests...

does anyone have any insight to the pro's and con's of deferring my admission a year, or will it even affect me at all? other than making me part of Class of 2010?

there arent really any cons, except finishing college a year later.

It's good to do something meaningful though. What do you plan on doing overseas?

Over here in Britain it's pretty common for people to defer entry for a year (taking a "gap year") - whether it be for working abroad, volunteering, or general bumming around.

I might have considered it if I was at a UK uni, but I'm already a year ahead of US students (being UK educated), and UK courses are typically 3 years (so with a gap year it totals 4)...

Yeah... I'd say the overseas opportunity sounds great. I don't see any problem deferring a year... go for it!

Do it! I've known a half dozen kids who took a gap year, and all thought it worth while.

I don't see any cons at all, and a long list of pros. My time off did me a world of good.

Definitely defer. This may be your only chance to take a year off from what I'm sure will be a very fast-paced and successful life for you, so take the year and do something fulfilling and different. What do you plan to do overseas (just curious cause I'm taking a year off to go abroad, and it's always helpful to hear from other gappers)? Good luck and congrats!!
