what do you think? it won't really hurt the college who someone(I) bunks out on, cuz they will have the wait list to go to... except of course the hassle for the admission staff?
but what about ethics of this? and past cases?

Why are you doing this?

If you have special circumstances you can always ask for an extension.

just to clarify, I meant that say you defer from a college this year, and get admitted to, and enroll at your dream school next year...

from others who are taking deferred admissions, do the colleges make it a condition that you cannot apply to any other university?

I have seen this done. I do not know what the school counselors at the high school would think of this and if they would cooperate, given commitments made. You would need the recs, transcripts, etc from them. On the surface it seems doable, but I know that it is not considered quite the thing to do.

I know that I am ever so tempted to delay admissions to school A for my son and let him go to School B and then have that option to go to A the following year, but that is not considered ethical. Basically, it comes down to commitments and contracts.

A lot of schools will not allow you to defer admissions if you enroll at another school.

Well, there are kids who take a gap year with an acceptance in hand, get interested in another school during that time, and apply. They then have two acceptances. I think that is the OP's direction.

When you defer admission for a year they tell you are not allowed to apply to another university. What happens if you do apply?

You take a risk. College world is small. You do run the risk that College A adcoms tell College B if it comes out. Also your hs couselors may look dimly at you doing this if it is not permitted to do this and you say you will not.

insaneabd: We all had dream schools too! But really, if the dream school rejected you, there's not much chance of it accepting you again as a high-schooler.

Go do something in your school you got accepted to. Come back and apply to their graduate school. :)

My friend was rejected by Tufts her senior year and accepted a place at a SUNY school. She deferred admission to that SUNY school to complete a Rotary Youth Exchange year in Brazil. She reapplied to Tufts and was accepted. Besides that, I have no other knowledge of that happening. You could try it but it would be a risk..

hmmm... Williams has no graduate program... :(

What would you think of a college's ethics if they allowed you to defer admission and the following spring sent you a rejection letter because their 2009 applicant pool was far better than the pool in 2008?

The same reasoning applies to the question you asked.

I think that answers it.... thanks....
