deferring admission but attending another school?

I have just figured out (after long, tedious calculations) that it is not going to be possible for me to attend my first-choice school next year for financial reasons. I still want to attend the school, but would need to obtain scholarships from the school to cover a more significant portion of the tuition. The office is closed now, but I was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to defer admission for one year, and attend the school after that year as a second-year student. Can I go to a less expensive school for a year, and then attend this one without re-applying? I don't know their stats for transfer applicants, so I'm not sure if I would be accepted again.
Any insight would be wonderful. Thank you.

You should ask the college and make sure they approve. You cannot enroll at another school as a full-time, degree-seeking student, but you might be able to be a non degree-seeking student at a local public university or a community college then transfer those credits.

If you really can't afford it, how is 1 year going to be enough? But no to answer yor question.

I'm hoping to apply for more scholarships, including scholarships awarded by the school, to make up the difference in tuition. I'd like to transfer after just one year as opposed to two, to be able to have some consistency for my undergrad. work.

You really shouldn't count on that. Ithica is unlikely to give you more later than not. Colleges make their best shot to get you as a frosh. Most scholarships are for freshmen. Most schools are terrible with transfer aid. Be happy with the school you start at.

Unfortunately, the school I will be starting at does not have my intended major. I intended it as my safety, not intending to go there, but financially it is my only option, so it will necessitate a transfer.
